CD2: Last week’s entrance of Rep. Kaela Berg to the CD2 DFL race suggests something bigger at work in national Democratic interest in who is the best candidate to succeed Rep. Angie Craig. Berg launched with the support of EMILY’s List – a well-funded group dedicated to electing pro-choice women, however, EMILY’s list wouldn’t go all in if they thought Berg couldn’t win. Yesterday she announced some serious union endorsements. To date the DFL race has been between Sen. Matt Klein and fmr. Sen. Matt Little. Little, who has been known to be a tireless campaigner and a former Mayor of Lakeville is likely more populist and a little more energetic which would play well with delegates. Little announced the postal carrier’s endorsement yesterday. Klein has said he’ll go to a primary, which expensive. That’s where Berg’s candidacy and union support plus EMILY’s list will make her formidable. Berg may now have an edge for the endorsement, and Little will have a strong following. That leaves Sen. Klein as a potential outsider for a primary. His announcement of raising $180K this week might be more than Little, but that’s not a rate that will impress the DCCC powers that be in DC in a seat that Democrats have to hold nationally to take the majority.

MAYOR RACES: via KSTP, VERBATIM: “Four candidates for Minneapolis mayor squared off in a second debate on Monday, touching on issues of public safety, homelessness, rent control and more. Incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey, State Sen. Omar Fateh, the Rev. DeWayne Davis, and Jazz Hampton fielded questions from moderator Tane Danger before residents of Becketwood Cooperative, a retirement community in south Minneapolis. Monday’s debate took place 10 days after the first debate of the campaign season, and candidate Brenda Short was left off the stage this time. … Frey defended his record over the past two terms while his three opponents made the case for a new style of leadership in Minneapolis. … Despite Danger pressing Fateh three times on a circumstance in which he, as mayor, would order a [homeless] encampment to be cleared, the senator evaded the question and claimed encampments as they have existed would never form while he is in office.” READ/WATCH: http://fluence-media.co/4nK9deG

GUN CTRL: via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “Minnesota is one of more than 40 states to have passed broad firearm preemption laws that specifically prohibit local governments from adopting gun regulations. … In early September, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, both of whom face reelection in November, stood with several suburban mayors at the Capitol and called for state legislators to allow cities to enact their own gun control ordinances. … [Now], St. Paul isn’t waiting — though its elected leaders and legal staff recognize the limits of their power. City Council President Rebecca Noecker said the city attorney’s office is developing a gun regulation ordinance with ‘trigger language,’ meaning it would take effect immediately if the state Legislature repeals or amends the preemption law.” READ: http://fluence-media.co/4gVHiWi
