LAUNCHING THE KIDS
Twins are in San Diego. Lynx in DC, and the Vikings host Baltimore tomorrow at noon.
Weekend is here, and weather seems way better. The pics of college drop offs seem as good as the first day of school. Launching these kids is so fun. The Gen Z focus group left this week back to school.
From the Retailers to the Mpls Chamber of Commerce, to the State Fair preview last night a week of chattering about the election and a sense that there is something unpredictable in the air. Afterall its Minnesota.
One observer agreed, it feels like 2006, while one suburban legislative candidate share that there’s a different conversation at the door since the primary, and that Republicans and Independents are more curious about the Tafoya candidacy.
Next week watching the booth’s at the State Fair will give us some sense, especially for the newer candidates and to see the energy they draw.
Meanwhile, the data center reputation problem grows without actually data…Embold Research finds that 75% of Americans oppose data centers being built in their area. One year ago, it was 42%. POLL: https://fluence-media.co/4c23cGp

Babler, Podgorski and Michaelson are in open seats, while the other five are attempting to oust Republican incumbents. Via a Forward Independence Party statement, these candidates are “promising to put their constituents ahead of their party,” but they are “free to maintain their individual political affiliations, platforms and legislative priorities.” STATEMENT: https://fluence-media.co/45ACQHV
NEW ADS: The Alliance for a Better Minnesota PAC has “launched a seven-figure digital ad buy” targeting Speaker Lisa Demuth’s bid for governor. FLANAGAN: Via Star Tribune, a look at what policies are and aren’t shared between Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a self-described progressive Democrat, and the Democratic Socialists of America, which Flanagan is not part of. VERBATIM: “Flanagan’s policy agenda overlaps with democratic socialist priorities on several fronts. At the national level, the most significant is her support for Medicare for All. … [But] the DSA also calls for abolishing prisons altogether, something Flanagan has not, though she has called for ending privately run prisons.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4wJUOCS
TAFOYA: Republican Senate candidate Michele Tafoya spoke to The Hugh Hewitt Show about her campaign this week. Notably, a clip of Tafoya misspeaking in this interview was shared widely on social media. Without correcting herself, Tafoya said: “The last people I’m going to answer to are the Minnesotans who send me there” to Washington, D.C. WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4gj7ni7
DFL: via Pioneer Press, VERBATIM: “Candidates topping the Democratic-Farmer-Labor ticket in this fall’s election rallied Thursday in a show of unity after Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan prevailed against Minnesota U.S. Rep. Angie Craig in a bruising Senate primary. At a union hall rally in Little Canada, Flanagan and Craig were joined by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is running to replace DFL Gov. Tim Walz, and Sen. Tina Smith, who is leaving office. … Asked about why he might not have attended the rally, a Walz spokesperson said the governor was ‘not on the ballot.’ DFL and campaign spokespeople didn’t say whether Walz had been invited.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4zvFNHa

STATE FAIR: via Office of the Atty. CURIOUS: When the Attorney General and Ramsey County Attorney brought this case, just weeks after Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher raised awareness about Somali gangs and garnered pushback and protest – the full-time activist voices didn’t say anything. Is that because of politics, or they acknowledge there may be a gang issue? It’s a reminder that just because activists raise questions, doesn’t mean its news – nor is it reality based.

President of the BET, Steven Brandt, [said] Mayor Jacob Frey’s more-than-11% proposal is too steep. … The other elected board member, Eric Harris Bernstein, plans to fully support the park board’s full levy hike amount of 5.86% while he still considers the city’s ask.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/46jxHUF

With two pressurized water reactors producing about 1,100 megawatts, Prairie Island generates enough electricity to power 1.5 million homes across the Upper Midwest. Unlike sources that depend on weather, nuclear energy delivers 24/7 reliability — providing the power we need today while protecting the environment for tomorrow.” LEARN MORE: https://fluence-media.co/4oCHdK9 (SPONSORED: Xcel Energy)

APPLETON: via Minnesota Reformer, VERBATIM: “The federal government’s purchase of a 1,600-bed prison in Appleton for an immigrant detention facility could deal a major blow to city, county and school finances. The prison had been owned and operated by CoreCivic since 1996 until its closure in 2010, which led to significant job loss and population decline. Even as the prison sat empty, however, CoreCivic regularly paid property taxes on the facility, generating 30% of Appleton’s tax revenue. … While the prospect of more than 500 new jobs is expected to bring new residents and economic activity to the area, it’s not clear how much that will offset the decrease in property tax revenue. … Appleton Mayor Justin Koepp said the city anticipates higher demand on its water and sewer services, and doesn’t yet know how to pay for the higher operating costs.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3SLvU7N
