MN HOUSE: via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “House leaders met Monday and Tuesday to negotiate a possible deal that could get the chamber back to work. GOP Leader Lisa Demuth and DFL Leader Melissa Hortman invited some of their colleagues to join negotiations in hopes of a breakthrough. … The two House caucuses had not reached a deal as of Tuesday afternoon. Demuth said they would meet again Tuesday night, and that she was encouraged by recent discussions.” DEMUTH: “Maybe the public pressure that we have been hearing from all over is actually letting them know that Minnesotans are quite frustrated with the lack of showing up for work.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3XbxkaX
MORE: via Pioneer Press, VERBATIM: “As power-sharing negotiations continued in the Minnesota House on Tuesday, Republicans…announced they’ll make good on their threats to file petitions to hold recall elections for 66 DFL House members. … [However], the Minnesota recall process is a lengthy one that will have to be approved by the Supreme Court. … Recall elections in Minnesota are ‘nearly impossible,’ said Hamline University political science professor David Schultz, who worked in Minnesota politics when the process first came together in 1996. ‘In fact, I’ll push it further — it was designed not to work.’” READ: https://fluence-media.co/42LHmD1
DFL CHAIR: via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “Several key Minnesota Democrats say they want a slower and more deliberate process to replace [DFL] Chair Ken Martin after Gov. Tim Walz was quick to throw his support behind his deputy chief of staff. They argue an open contest is needed. … Walz’s endorsement of Richard Carlbom came just as Martin won his bid for Democratic National Committee chair. … Ron Harris, who was the state campaign director for the [Harris-Walz] campaign, and longtime campaign operative Alana Petersen are also mulling runs…Ron Harris said the governor’s endorsement will not seal the field of candidates. The party needs to have a real discussion about the direction it wants to go post-Martin, he added. HARRIS: “The position has been open for 48 hours, it’s a Monday morning, and it seems like it’s a foregone conclusion that this is where we’re going to go,” he said of Walz’s endorsement. “I just don’t think that’s what people are looking for.”…Former DFL Executive Director Corey Day also said he expects the field to grow. DAY: “I don’t think it’s gonna be a coronation,” said Day, who expects half a dozen candidates to seek the job. “I think you’re gonna see a real competition.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4htjuc4
FRAUD: Via an Instagram reel, former DFL Rep. Ryan Winkler called for state Democrats to take government fraud more seriously. Winkler was the House Majority Leader from 2019 to 2023. WINKLER: “Democrats seem to be very afraid of taking on the fraud issue. … We absolutely cannot just let Republicans take that issue and run with it. We actually have to clean up the problem…[or else] public confidence in our ability to deliver services in this state will completely disappear. We can’t let this issue become something that we just forget about, or that we hope goes away. It won’t. … Democrats have to be the ones leading on the issue.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4hK3Ich
EDUCATION: via FOX 9, VERBATIM: “Minnesota legislators are preparing for the possibility that President Donald Trump will follow through on threats to dismantle the federal Department of Education. … Federal funding accounts for 10% of the state’s education budget. Minnesota gets more than $1 billion a year in school funding from the federal government, [and] a lot of the money covers things the state doesn’t pay for, like $37.5 million in startup funds for charter schools. … Republicans [said] the panic is premature [and] this is what voters wanted. ‘Americans across the country gave President Trump a mandate,’ said Sen. Eric Lucero (R-St. Michael). … Democrats countered [that] voters didn’t cast ballots to bring chaos to their kids. ‘We have to build a budget for two years,’ said Sen. Erin Maye Quade (DFL-Apple Valley). ‘We can’t even say what’s going to happen two hours from now.’” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4jLR1Qc
RESPONSE: Via a joint statement from Reps. Cheryl Youakim and Sydney Jordan, DFL education chairs, STATEMENT: “[Dismantling] the U.S. Department of Education…would be the latest in a pattern of harmful, irresponsible actions that only serve to create confusion for our schools and negatively impact students and families. … We will continue to work with our Senate DFL counterparts, as well as the Minnesota Department of Education, to protect that progress and partner with our schools for whatever obstacles await.”
MORE: The Senate GOP responded to DFL concerns about the U.S. Department of Education by sharing a video of educators’ testimony during a hearing in the Senate Education Finance Committee. The GOP said in a press release that schools in Minnesota are “begging for help,” and “the real issue” is “heavy-handed and unfunded mandates thrust on them from DFL leadership.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3WM8dLs
UMN: via KARE 11, VERBATIM: “The U.S. Department of Education is investigating five universities, including the University of Minnesota, over reported antisemitism. Further, some current and former employees we surveyed indicated that they believed they had experienced retaliation after submitting a human resources complaint.” REPORT: https://fluence-media.co/4gsnrfH
GAZA: Sen. Tina Smith was interviewed on CNN to discuss Pres. Donald Trump’s plan to “take over” Gaza, possibly with military action. SMITH: “You’ve got to take this guy seriously, [but] I’m thinking about what’s happening at the U.S. Treasury tonight, and it seems to be completely possible that [Trump] is also trying to distract us all from the ransacking of the Treasury Department’s federal payment system that is going right now under the thumb of Elon Musk. … I think this kind of lawlessness is just — we cannot stand for it.” CLIP: https://fluence-media.co/42IVmNV
OMAR: Rep. Ilhan Omar is responding to pushback from the White House and Elon Musk on some of her recent claims. As seen in yesterday’s morning take, Omar spoke at a press conference condemning changes to USAID without congressional approval, saying “This is what the beginning of a dictatorship looks like.” The White House directly responded to Omar’s claim in a press release, saying that “Ending U.S. taxpayer funding of [USAID] is not akin to a ‘dictatorship’ — it’s holding unelected bureaucrats accountable.” Meanwhile, Musk shared a post about Omar on his social platform X, saying she was “breaking the law” at an event informing migrants of their rights. Omar dismissed this, saying “This video is manipulated, and I wasn’t even at the event shown. … It’s embarrassing that these people are just so easy to mislead.” SEE: https://fluence-media.co/3Q3IMBd
MORE: Rep. Ilhan Omar was asked to respond to Elon Musk’s claims about her “breaking the law” during a live interview on CNN. I’m not in that room, actually, that they pan out to — that is an edited video. And in the interview, I was asked what would I say to Somalis who are undocumented. … It is important for people to exercise their Fifth Amendment right to remain silent unless they feel confident that they have the legal protections that they need.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4hJCLp0

RESPONSE: Rep. Angie Craig was interviewed on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ yesterday to discuss how tariffs will affect farmers and consumers. CRAIG: “The cost of food is going to go up at a time when you can’t go to the grocery store without paying a hundred bucks just to walk through the door. … We have to acknowledge that not all of this administration’s objectives are wrong…but we have to be there to fight and point [issues] out because our family farmers are depending on us.” CLIP: https://fluence-media.co/4jNfa8Q
