MOOD: It’s getting scary out there. The mood of the electorate is very anxious, which is normal, but this year extremely heightened five days before the election. Each side is framing the future of the country being on the line, but to an individual the gravity of the results is weighing heavily. Multiple people, leaning Democrat have volunteered they’ve taken Wednesday off for a “mental health day”. Meanwhile Republicans at the fringes have suggested that regardless the election is illegitimate. Most of Minnesota, and America simply want a working and trusted system. I’ve met Trump supporters who say he’s already won, and Democrats who say Democrats will win Texas. In other words, this election, more than any before has created a truly concerning lack of living in data or reality. The political mental health of the state and country is concerning. However, the post-election reaction will tell how each side copes. If Democrats win, they will have a massive sigh of relief, while some Republicans will amplify more conspiracy theories. If Republicans win, they will puff their chests, and Democrats will hand wring and fret deeply.
Either way, if you read our tip sheets, I am hopeful that you have a measured reaction regardless of if your team wins or loses. It will take the unemotional, the centered citizens to bridge the divide. If leaders lead, but no one follows – they aren’t a leader. That’s a lesson for next Wednesday and beyond.
SENATE POLL: via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar maintains a substantial lead over her GOP opponent, Royce White, in the latest MinnPost-Embold Research poll. … [Klobuchar] leads by 12% among likely voters (52%-40%). Those results are almost identical to what the MinnPost-Embold Research poll found in September. … In [2018], she defeated her Republican opponent, Jim Newberger, by a wider margin (24%) than what these poll results are showing. … Support for the two was much closer among independent voters, with 37% supporting Klobuchar and 31% backing White. … Klobuchar had more support among women, with 56% of female voters supporting her and 38% backing White. It was closer among men, with 46% of the male respondents supporting Klobuchar and 44% backing White.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3AkrtaS
HOUSE POLL: via KSTP, VERBATIM: “Republicans need to flip at least four seats to take control of the Minnesota House. … Our final pre-election KSTP/SurveyUSA poll indicates they have a chance to do that, but they will have to overcome a slight Democratic advantage. … When likely voters were asked ‘Are you generally more inclined to vote for a Republican or Democrat in House races,’ 48% say a Democrat, 43% say a Republican and 7% are undecided. … Competitive seats are all in the Twin Cities suburbs or in Greater Minnesota [regional hubs]. Democrats lead in urban areas like Minneapolis and St. Paul by a wide margin, 63% to 32%. The DFL advantage is much smaller in suburbs, where they lead 49% to 42%. Republicans have a big advantage in greater Minnesota with a 56% to 35% lead.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/48rHPLy
ELECTIONJUDGES: via MPR News, VERBATIM: “Minnesota Republicans and the conservative Minnesota Voters Alliance scored a pre-election court victory that will require the state’s most-populous county to redo its makeup of a panel overseeing absentee ballots. … The Minnesota Supreme Court sided with the groups in a lawsuit over election judges appointed to an absentee ballot board in Hennepin County. Those entities argued that Hennepin County failed to exhaust a list of Republican-preferred election judges. … Justices gave the county until Friday to come into compliance. The court ordered the county to redo its election judge selections in a fashion that first goes through the lists provided by the GOP, even if it means taking extra steps to contact the potential judges.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3C865X2
MNLEG: FOX 9 interviewed DFL Chair Ken Martin and GOP Chair David Hann to discuss the upcoming election and each party’s respective get-out-the-vote efforts.
MARTIN: “When we’re at the doors we hear a lot about, of course, abortion rights and the economy. … There’s at least four flip opportunities for us in 3A and 3B in northern Minnesota, out in the eastern suburbs here in Afton and Hastings and 41A and 41B. … [There’s a] record amount of contributions, record amount of volunteerism. The energy and excitement is something we haven’t seen in many years.”
HANN: “[People are] fed up with the chaos. … [We’re looking at] a seat down in the Winona area, for example, that was held for a long time by a Democrat who decided not to run again. Some seats up in the St. Cloud area that are in play, areas of the Twin Cities that were also won by very, very small margins in the last election by Democrats. … I do believe we’ll see a Republican victory. What we’re seeing is a lot of independent voters supporting Republican candidates.”

SPENDING: via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “The House DFL has more money in the bank — $3.6 million — than the House GOP has raised in two years, according to the campaign’s final state Campaign Finance Board reports. … Battleground districts help tell the story. Rep. Jeff Brand, DFL-St Peter, is defending his seat against GOP challenger Erica Schwartz. The House DFL caucus has already spent $381,000 helping Brand. … The GOP knows how important that race is as well, but has so far spent just $95,000 in District 18A. In District 3B, incumbent Rep. Natalie Zeleznikar [is] challenged by former judge Mark Munger. The House GOP has spent $106,000 in the Lake Superior fronting district; the House DFL $304,000. … [Plus], Brand has benefited from $794,000 from independent expenditure committees [and] Munger has seen $775,000.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4hkq0Ch
HD26A: via MPR News, VERBATIM: “DFL House candidate Sarah Kruger and GOP House candidate Aaron Repinski are vying for the seat. For Democrats, a Kruger win would ease the party’s path to keeping a Minnesota House majority they’ve had for the last six years. For Republicans, a Repinski win combined with a few others would put them in charge in 2025… That’s why this race has attracted unprecedented attention for a district that runs from the shores of the Mississippi River through townships that make up this scenic part of the state. Already, independent spending groups have dropped nearly $1 million into the race this year, making it among the most expensive in the state with weeks of financial activity yet to account for…In this region with notably low voter turnout that has swung between Republican and Democratic candidates in recent years, victory for Kruger or Repinski could come down to a handful of votes.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3YA1Gno
BALLOT Q: via MPR News, VERBATIM: “Dozens of cities, townships and a few counties are asking voters to make multimillion-dollar investments. … The Minnesota Legislature failed to pass a bonding bill last session, leaving public works projects in limbo and municipalities hunting for workarounds. … Richfield is asking voters to approve a sales tax [to] fund building a new community center. … Cottage Grove voters, too, have three ballot questions before them asking to impose a 0.5 percent sales tax [for] recreation-focused investments. … Stearns County voters will decide whether to impose a 0.375 percent sales tax for up to 30 years to finance $325 million for a new justice center. … [And] St. Cloud residents will decide whether to authorize up to $43.5 million in bonding to improve ‘critical’ public safety facilities.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4hFPTN5
POLARIZATION: via WCCO-TV, VERBATIM: “No Republican candidate for president has won Minnesota since 1972. Polling averages show Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Donald Trump…which indicates that that streak may continue this year. But Trump came within striking distance in 2016, narrowly losing by 1.5 points to Hillary Clinton and transforming the map, flipping many rural counties that voted for President Barack Obama in 2012 in his favor. … President Joe Biden then won by 7 points four years later, though the county-by-county breakdown was mostly unchanged.” READ/WATCH:https://fluence-media.co/3AjP0c1
CD2: via KSTP, VERBATIM: “The race between Joe Teirab and Angie Craig for Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District seat wraps up in one week. … Teirab, 37, says his number one issue is the economy — cutting government spending and regulations. … He says he wants more resources for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and that some immigrants who are in the country illegally should be deported, although Teirab adds the government shouldn’t be ‘rounding people up who’ve been here twenty years.’ … [Craig] touted her support for the Inflation Reduction Act and its impact on public infrastructure projects. Other focuses of her campaign have been supporting law enforcement, accessibility to college and health care, and protecting reproductive rights.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3A808ZC
GOTV: KARE 11 has profiles on the organizations that are trying to get Asian and Latino voters to the polls in Minnesota this year. VERBATIM: “According to a September 2024 voter survey by Asian American Pacific Islander Data, 27% of Asian-American voters said they hadn't been contacted by either political party trying to get their vote. … [And] while the secretary of state publishes polling information in Spanish, experts say there are still challenges when it comes to activating Latino voters. Minnesota groups have been hard at work getting voting information out and challenging misinformation.” ASIAN: https://fluence-media.co/3YHXYsZ LATINO: https://fluence-media.co/4fqBWQV
MAILERS: via Minnesota Reformer, VERBATIM: “The election is less than a week away, which means it’s time for [Minnesotans to receive] get-out-the-vote mailers that remind people their voting history is part of the public record. ‘We’re sending this mailing to you and your neighbors to share who does and does not vote in an effort to promote election participation,’ as one mailing told some Twin Cities residents this week. ‘We will be reviewing these records after the election to determine whether or not you joined your neighbors in voting.’ The mailers…adopt that vaguely menacing tattletale tone for a reason: Research has shown, over and over again, that it works…[providing] a more than 8% turnout boost relative to the control.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3NKotrg
From yesterday’s Walz Watch:
BIDEN: Via AP News, Gov. Tim Walz was asked during an interview on Good Morning America to respond to Pres. Joe Biden’s recent gaffe about Donald Trump supporters following a Trump rally speaker’s comment that Puerto Rico is a “floating island of garbage.” Biden said Tuesday that “the only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters, his demonization of Latinos” — but White House officials claim Biden stuttered and was trying to say “the only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s demonization of Latinos.” Walz downplayed the comments. ST PAUL: via Pioneer Press, VERBATIM: “A coalition of self-described fiscal watchdogs has released a wide-ranging, 18-page report intended to raise alarm about the state of St. Paul’s finances and fiscal outlook, from rising property taxes to a shrinking downtown tax base. The report — authored in part by a former city council member, a developer and former city budget director — discourages the city from investing in new parks initiatives…until the city can ‘right the ship.’ … Given the city’s rising debt load, the ‘In$ight St. Paul’ report warns the city could jeopardize its coveted AAA bond rating. That would make it more difficult and pricier to borrow funds to pay for major construction, [which] could lead to homeowners and other property owners paying even higher taxes.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3C6lB5I
MPLS: via Sahan Journal, VERBATIM: “Minneapolis city staff want to keep George Floyd Square open to vehicle traffic, while bringing back bus lines and preserving artwork and memorials. More than four years after George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police officers, the intersection where he was killed in south Minneapolis has remained almost unchanged. … The city is recommending a ‘flexible-open’ concept that would keep vehicular traffic in the intersection, but allow the streets to be closed off for events, such as the anniversary of Floyd’s murder. Officials hosted an open house at Calvary Lutheran Church Tuesday night to unveil the plan to community members. About 200 people attended.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3NGSCrJ
MORE: via MPR News, VERBATIM: “Some residents and business owners say they’re glad the city is putting resources towards improving the intersection’s infrastructure. But others say they don’t want the city tearing up the streets — at least before they feel the city has addressed their demands for justice. Jay Webb, who lives nearby and maintains the garden at George Floyd Square, said the city is interfering with the continuing work neighbors put into the memorials, art and protest.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3YkkUNy
HOUSING: via Bring Me The News, VERBATIM: “A Minneapolis City Council committee has approved a proposal to add two people who are currently or were previously unhoused to join its housing advisory board. The resolution to restructure the Minneapolis Advisory Committee on Housing, which was authored by Ward 9 Council member Jason Chavez, will be presented to the city council at Thursday's meeting. … The amendment to the committee proposed by Chavez would remove one seat from the Lived Expertise Advisory Group (LEAG) and create two new seats for individuals who are currently or were formerly homeless.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4fatOEI

DULUTH: via Duluth News Tribune, VERBATIM: “For years, [Duluth’s] tourism industry has pumped money into the local economy. A dedicated local tax to promote the city as a visitor destination has proven a useful tool to grow the financial pie. But that pie now appears likely poised to shrink, according to City Finance Director Jen Carlson. … Carlson noted that Americans’ savings, discretionary spending and travel have declined this year. And Duluth has been far from immune to the consequences, experiencing a corresponding dip in local tourism tax revenues.
