MNLEG: via KSTP, VERBATIM: “The 2025 Minnesota Legislature got off to a slow start with a nearly month-long boycott by DFL House members, [but] that slow start will have to result in a rapid-fire finish if lawmakers are going to finish work on the budget by the May 19 deadline. So far, they’ve only passed four bills in three months. … In 2023, the previous budget year, 26 bills had passed by mid-April. … When lawmakers return to work after the Easter/Passover break next week, they’ll have 28 days left to craft a nearly $70 billion two-year budget for 2026-27. At this point, none of the budget bills are in conference committees where compromises will be worked out. … Since 2015, every legislative session where there has been divided government [has needed] a special session.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4is2qTj
HOSPITALS: Via Star Tribune, an extensive data analysis of financial hardships in Minnesota’s hospitals. VERBATIM: “Minnesota has emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic with a fragile network of hospitals at risk of closure and vulnerable to cuts in government aid. [After 2023], 31 of 127 Minnesota hospitals were financially distressed…meaning they had lost money on operations in four of the prior eight years. Another eight hospitals were one bad year away from being distressed. … Twelve hospitals posted operating losses of 10% or more in 2023, the highest total in at least a decade. … Nearly a quarter of the state’s hospitals are in distress, but cutting services isn’t a survival strategy. … At one time, [hospitals] could rely on a local pipeline for workers, but interest in health care careers evaporated after the pandemic, [leaving] no choice but to hire outside contract nurses and health care providers at double or triple the cost.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4lB2L93
SCHOOLS: via Minnesota Reformer, VERBATIM: “Federal education dollars are now at risk thanks to President Donald Trump’s dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, which could significantly hurt Minnesota public school districts — the majority of which receive at least 10% of their budgets from the feds. … Many northern Minnesota school districts in and around tribal nations receive significant federal funds, as they are low-income areas. Cass Lake-Bena Public Schools, Mahnomen Public School District and Waubun-Ogema-White Earth Schools received about 30% of their district revenue from the feds in fiscal year 2022, [while] Red Lake Public School District received nearly 40%. … St. Paul Public School District received $176 million from the federal government in the same year, which accounts for 21% of its total revenue. Minneapolis Public Schools received $145 million, about 19% of its total revenue.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/42OA6Wx
Lifeline of Rural Health Care: Why Local Pharmacies Matter in 340B - In the heart of Greater Minnesota, access to local, 24/7 health care services isn’t just a necessity – it’s the cornerstone to vibrant rural communities. The 340B Drug Pricing Program has been instrumental in enabling nonprofit hospitals like Essentia Health to provide comprehensive, high-quality care to the state’s rural and underserved communities. Unfortunately, out-of-state pharmaceutical companies continue to blatantly ignore Minnesota’s law that protects safety net providers’ access to 340B discounted drugs. Legislators should stand up to these drug manufacturers and protect the 340B Program, ensuring that Minnesota’s rural communities continue to have access to life-saving - and community sustaining – health care services. RESEARCH: via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “The University of Minnesota says it braces every day for an unwelcome notice that a federal grant it has been awarded for scientific and medical research has been abruptly canceled. … The Trump Administration’s termination of more than $12 billion in Health and Human Services grants has wiped out a significant amount of money to Minnesota’s scientific and medical community. Scientists and medical researchers have had to stop their work after receiving word that it ‘no longer effectuates agency priorities,’ and some have had to fire personnel or even shut down laboratories. … In most cases, the grants to the University of Minnesota were canceled after the school was able to draw down some of the money, so the full amount of the grant was not lost.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3GhuJXm
CRAIG: Via WCCO-TV’s Caroline Cummings, Rep. Angie Craig said she would not run for governor in 2026 if Gov. Tim Walz runs for reelection, but she left the door open if he decides to retire from his position. Walz still has not confirmed if he will run for a third term. Craig also reiterated that she will make a decision on running for House or Senate “before the end of this month.” CRAIG: “I'm certainly not going to run against Tim Walz if he decides to run for re-election. So he knows that, and so does everybody else.” TWEETS: https://fluence-media.co/42jTeM7
MEDICAID SUPPORTS HEALTH CARE FOR ALL OF US: Medicaid keeps Minnesota’s hospitals strong and ensures communities across the state have access to care. Brad Finstad press release, VERBATIM: “Today, Congressman Brad Finstad (MN-01) introduced the Save SBA from Sanctuary Cities Act, legislation that would remove and relocate U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offices located in jurisdictions that have adopted sanctuary policies. … If an office is currently in a state that is not a sanctuary jurisdiction, it will be relocated to another area within that same state. … The [bill] defines ‘sanctuary jurisdiction’ as any state or political subdivision of a state that has in effect policies that prohibit or restrict immigration enforcement.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4inXa2W

GOOGLE: via CNN, VERBATIM: “Google has illegally built ‘monopoly power’ with its web advertising business, a federal judge in Virginia has ruled, siding with the Justice Department in a landmark case against the tech giant that could reshape the basic economics of running a modern website. The ruling [is] the US government’s second major court victory over Google in less than a year. … The decision could force Google to divest part of its online ad business. But the fact that the government did not win on all of its claims makes that outcome less likely.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4jxYscB
RESPONSE: via a Sen. Amy Klobuchar statement, KLOBUCHAR: “This verdict is an important win for consumers, small businesses and publishers. AUTISM: via WCCO-TV, VERBATIM: “Autism researchers and advocates [in Minnesota] are pushing back against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s comments that autism has reached ‘epidemic’ levels. … In Minneapolis, Dr. Jen Holandi and Dr. Amy Esler contributed directly to the latest CDC report. The University of Minnesota researchers found numbers in Minnesota to be slightly higher than the national average, with autism prevalent in 1 in 28 Minnesota kids. Esler says she attributes the spiking rates to more thorough research than years prior, along with an expanded definition of what falls on the autism spectrum. … More than 400 advocates, parents and autistic adults are spending this week at the Autism Society of Minnesota's annual conference in Bloomington, [where] people are commenting on [RFK Jr.’s] remarks.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/43Yha8Y
RESPONSE: Rep. Angie Craig harshly criticized HHS Sec. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for saying this week that he thinks “autism destroys families” and children with autism “will never pay taxes,” as seen in yesterday’s health take. CRAIG: “RFK Jr. not only spread misinformation about autism, he used his platform to disparage our kids, our friends and our neighbors. As the parents of a son on the spectrum — graduating from college with honors next month, by the way – Cheryl and I know our kids need support, not disparagement. MPLS: via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “More people — particularly recent immigrants — may soon be able to legally sell food and drinks from carts in Minneapolis. The City Council voted 13-0 Thursday to loosen restrictions on where sidewalk cart vendors are allowed to sell, expanding it to a much broader area. … The ordinance now goes to Mayor Jacob Frey, who is supportive of the measure. The issue has become more pressing as the number of people selling food in city parks and on street corners has multiplied since the pandemic.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/42FmdZz
MORE: via FOX 9, VERBATIM: “Minneapolis Parks and Rec Board Commissioners considered the enforcement of smoking marijuana in city parks [this week]. … Supporters say tying an ordinance to a petty misdemeanor, and subsequent fine, would further enhance compliance.
