TAKE FOR A BREAK
Yesterday the Minneapolis City Council meeting devolved to shouting and crying. The legislature has already had tears too. The emotions of 2026 are real for many, but public officials seem to be letting emotions and party loyalty get the best of them.
Projecting about a resolution related to European investment in the US for a city, or proposing laws that are sure to be tested in the courts may make you feel good, or give you the righteous sound bite, but it isn’t addressing the challenges of most Minnesotans.
While some legislators have town hall meetings, many will take the time for a vacation, which is fine. The best thing for legislators who are not on vacation is to listen to some constituents outside your inner circle. The bubble mentality for the caucus or party, doesn’t represent your district – in fact, from guns to regulations Minnesota isn’t aligned with the current positions of all your districts.
The tie shouldn’t mean more divide, and fear of offending your caucus – it should lead to small groups defying party to be in the middle without concern. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so emotional if the energy was at finding the middle versus the righteous loyalty pledge.
TENSE TIMES
NOKINGS: Gov. Tim Walz and Rep. Shelley Buck, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her are now on the list of speakers for the No Kings rally Saturday at the Capitol. MPLSCOUNCIL: via Bring Me The News, VERBATIM: “An hour into its meeting Thursday morning, the Minneapolis City Council took a recess to defuse tension after a discussion went off the rails, with members of the progressive and moderate factions accusing each other of disrespect and unequal treatment. [It started] as the council debated a resolution urging European financial institutions to divest from companies that enable the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE. … The council ended up passing the ICE-related divestment resolution by a 9-4 vote.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4bLh86r
DEFUND: via Fox 9, VERBATIM: “Mayors and police chiefs from 32 cities and departments responded with a letter, saying Greene’s comments are “not grounded in reality, tradition or Minnesota law.”…They pointed out what they say is critical mutual aid provided by deputies on a regular basis, adding that without their support, the metro area would rank the lowest in the country for police staffing and “crimes would go unsolved, 9-1-1 calls unanswered.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4bDxTli
SESSION: via KARE 11, VERBATIM: “On Thursday, one day before a deadline to pass certain policy bills out of committee, the lack of progress led to a tense House floor session filled with partisan politics. First, the House DFL made a motion to force a bill onto the floor that would limit ICE access in schools, a piece of legislation that failed in an education committee. … In response, the House GOP motioned to bring a bill to the floor related to age verification for online pornographic material. … Then, Democrats tried to revive the assault weapons and high-capacity magazine ban that Republicans already blocked. … With the House split evenly at 67-67, though, these motions had no chance of moving forward.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3Pqyo9T

DFL Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy said the meal with GOP Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, GOP House Speaker Lisa Demuth and DFL House Leader Zack Stephenson was the first time the leaders had met extensively since the end of last session. … [Lawmakers] remain stalled on gun and immigration measures, [but] Murphy said she’s still hopeful that the two parties and two chambers can find some common ground after the holiday break.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3Pqyo9T
GOV RACE: via MPR, VERBATIM: “State Rep. Kristin Robbins, who is seeking the GOP endorsement in the race for governor, has seemingly slammed the door on a run for state Senate. Robbins [said] she’s not interested in running for an open Maple Grove seat. She was asked about reports of pressure from the GOP for Robbins to pursue the seat. … Robbins said she’s still moving forward with her gubernatorial campaign, [even though] she has lagged in party polls.” ROBBINS: “As I’ve said multiple times publicly to multiple reporters, no, I’m not going to be running for the Minnesota Senate, and so I don’t know why it keeps coming up.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4dcRzxI

OIG: via KSTP, VERBATIM: “For the second time this week, a bill to create a statewide Office of Inspector General (OIG) passed a Minnesota House committee. However, even the author of the bill acknowledges it’s far from a done deal. NORRIS: ‘I do not view this bill as a finished product yet,’ Rep. Matt Norris, DFL-Blaine, told the House Judiciary Committee. … There is no ‘fiscal note’ on the House bill estimating the cost of the OIG, but Norris says an estimate on the Senate bill last year was $13 million every two years, while the governor has a proposal that would cost $17 million. … That question and many others still need to be answered before the bill gets to the House floor.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4t9A3ir
SPORTSBETS: via WCCO-TV, VERBATIM: “The annual debate over legalizing sports betting in Minnesota is back at the state Capitol, with lawmakers pointing to a new federal shift on prediction markets as a potential game-changer. … DFL Sen. Nick Frentz, who authored the Senate bill, said President Donald Trump’s decision to allow prediction market sites like Kalshi and Polymarket to operate in all 50 states could change the dynamics of the debate. … Frentz put the odds of his bill passing at 50-50.” FRENTZ: “The federal government’s made some rulings that essentially allow prediction markets [to] make sports betting legal in Minnesota. … If we accept that sports betting is now being allowed in Minnesota, I think many people feel the better path is to regulate it.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/41vqPkJ
CHARITY: via KARE 11, VERBATIM: “Advocates for charitable gambling argue that a surprising amount of [their] money actually goes to the state in the form of taxes. … One idea to solve this problem would be to use the money that could be generated from legalized sports betting in Minnesota to carry some of the tax burden that would be left behind after a tax cut. … Allied Charities of Minnesota Executive Director Rachel Jenner [said] there are some lawmakers who are interested in exploring this idea,” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4sD4NZr

TRAILS: via MN Senate advisory, VERBATIM: “Senator Grant Hauschild (DFL–Hermantown) is voicing strong opposition to Senate File 1245, legislation that would significantly discourage ATV access across Northern Minnesota. … SF1245 would move Minnesota toward a designated trail system statewide, requiring routes to be formally mapped and signed in order to remain open. Hauschild noted that many existing routes relied upon by residents and visitors could be lost over time due to the added complexity, cost, and lack of resources needed to maintain them.” HAUSCHILD: “Northern Minnesota is different, and our policies need to reflect that.”

Chughtai was on a plane to Cuba, on a ‘humanitarian aid mission.’ … Chughtai said she paid her own way to Cuba. … As for the Uptown meeting she missed, Chughtai said, ‘I deeply care about my community and work every day to improve it, and I appreciate that people are frustrated in this moment. In Minneapolis, the City Council on Thursday, March 26, was unable to garner the nine votes needed to override Mayor Jacob Frey’s veto of a measure that would have given residents 30 additional days to pay their rent. … [But] St. Paul’s City Council unanimously passed an identical measure the previous afternoon. Mayor Kaohly Her said earlier this month she does not support the policy, but recognized the council had a veto-proof majority.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4uRuC9y

Now, Owatonna officials want to replace both with new police and fire buildings at a cost of $65 million — but a vocal contingent of residents is pushing back. … More than 1,500 Owatonna residents have signed a petition to halt plans and put the decision to a citywide vote either on November’s ballot or in a special election.
