FIRST
TODAY: Precinct caucuses to decide on state convention delegates and other party business will begin at 7:00 p.m. tonight. Non-binding straw polls will give an early look at the Governor’s race.
According to their website, the DFL says it has 9,000 trained observers for caucuses.
MORE: via MPR, VERBATIM: “At precinct caucuses around the state, voters will cast straw poll ballots. Those could narrow the field of candidates running for governor. The preference ballot results aren’t binding, but they can help propel candidates to frontrunner status or shrink the pack in races with lots of hopefuls.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4bzgDxY
WHAT TO WATCH:
· If Lisa Demuth or Kendall Qualls don’t’ finish in the top 2 places one of their campaigns is essentially over.
· If the DFL preference ballot for Governor shows a large chunk of undecided, rather than supporting Amy Klobuchar there could be a lane for a far-left challenger.
GOV POLL: Via a KSTP poll, Minnesota voters would prefer Sen. Amy Klobuchar over any major Republican challengers in the race for governor. Klobuchar won every polled matchup by 14 to 20 points, with her best result being a 52% majority versus Mike Lindell, who earned 32%. Klobuchar’s worst performance was 48% versus Rep. Kristin Robbins, who still trailed by 15 points at 33%. The best performing Republicans were former candidate Scott Jensen at 35% and Speaker Lisa Demuth at 34%. The poll also showed Klobuchar’s approval rating is 48%, while 67% think Gov. Tim Walz was right to drop out. POLL: https://fluence-media.co/45H1jM3
NOTABLE: Klobuchar running even in rural Minnesota against most Republicans.
MORE: via Northern News Now’s Dan Wolfe, VERBATIM: “There’s been buzz about Sen. Grant Hauschild being on Amy Klobuchar’s shortlist for potential running mates. I asked him about it in a sit-down interview. … He wouldn’t say whether he’s been contacted by her campaign or whether he’d consider it. Hauschild only said he’ll do whatever he can to help Klobuchar win the race for governor.” TWEETS: https://fluence-media.co/4khRYAm
NOTE: Sources say it’s unlikely that Klobuchar would pick a state Senator in a close race as the DFL wants their best chance at holding the majority. The name no one is buzzing about that would be a strong pick, is Ag Commissioner Thom Petersen.
SENATE RACE: Retiring Sen. Tina Smith endorsed Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan over Rep. Angie Craig as her preferred DFL candidate one day before precinct caucuses begin. Smith previously said in multiple interviews that she did not plan to endorse a successor, but Smith and Flanagan appeared together in a social media video announcing the endorsement and criticizing the ongoing ICE surge in Minnesota. WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3ZahMVo
FLASHBACK: Via the Feb. 14, 2025 edition of morning take, Sen. Tina Smith told reporters she was not planning to endorse a successor. SMITH: “I’m excited to see what leaders come forward. I think we have such a deep bench of talent in Minnesota. It’s not my job to pick my successor at all. That’s the job of Minnesota voters.” SEE: https://fluence-media.co/3NLBBjt
PHILLIPS: via X from fmr. Rep. Dean Phillips, VERBATIM: “Tina Smith, Peggy Flanagan, and Tim Walz publicly trashed me for advocating for a competitive Democratic primary in 2024 - helping pave the path for Trump’s return. Judgment and courage matter to me, which is why I strongly support @AngieCraigMN !”
CAUCUSES: via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “Candidates for retiring Sen. Tina Smith’s seat will face their first real test Tuesday as both Republican and Democrats vying to represent the state in the U.S. Senate fight for support in their party caucuses. … Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan [said] her campaign began last year to woo the 1,200 or so party volunteers who attend the caucuses. … Rep. Angie Craig [said] her campaign will be present at about 80% of the caucuses on Tuesday to do some last-minute politicking.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4tdA7P7
REPLACEMENT: via Facebook, Tom Horner and John Kaul think that fmr. Sen. Al Franken should be Klobuchar’s pick to fill her seat. Sometimes the past proves the current.
MNHOUSE: The House GOP announced a 2025 fundraising total of $1.742 million with $1.167 million on hand, noting in a press release that these are “all-time records…for an off-year.” As reported in morning take last week, the House DFL announced $2.627 million raised with $1.595 million on hand, which was also described as an “odd-year fundraising record.”
CONGRESSCASH: FEC data for 2025 is now finalized, so here is one last update on fundraising in federal races. Candidates not mentioned below had current totals in yesterday’s newsletters. SEE: https://fluence-media.co/4kjzQ9o
