WALZ: Gov. Tim Walz was interviewed separately by WCCO-TV and KARE 11 to discuss his thoughts on his political future, working with a divided legislature, pushing back against Pres. Donald Trump’s policies and more. Notably, Walz said he supports the deal giving GOP Rep. Lisa Demuth the speakership for two years, but he still says he’s unsure about running for a third term and whether Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan would join him again. Responses are sorted by topic:
● On a third term, WALZ: “We'll get through this legislative session, and I think if you see [approval] numbers like this, and you see the public being there, and I feel like I'm able to do the job, I think I would look at it. … If the people of Minnesota think it's the best for them, I'd be honored to continue to serve. … I think [Flanagan] — she and I together — have been highly successful, and when we get to that bridge, we'll cross it.”
● On a national office run, WALZ: “I'm content here to do my job here. That [VP run] was more of a calling. … If you get asked, I said I would try and serve. I think Minnesota's doing well…and I think you just see what happens. I got this job for two more years, so I'm gonna focus on it.”
● On passing a budget, WALZ: “I feel very confident, as far as bonding — things like the Rapidan Dam, roads, bridges, water treatment plant, keeping up the University of Minnesota — those things are really popular amongst the public. So I do think we get it done [on time], and we're in a solid financial position.”
● On the House power-sharing deal, WALZ: “[Making Demuth speaker] was a decision that [Melissa] Hortman made. And I have come to understand that there is no more skillful [and] honorable legislator than Melissa Hortman. … She did it in the best interest of Minnesota. If she supports that decision, then I certainly do.”
● On DOGE lawsuits, WALZ: “Sending in six 20-somethings to have access to the Social Security system by the richest man in the world who is not elected by anyone — that should be deeply concerning, whether you agree with his politics or not. It sets a precedence that we've never seen.”
● On what Democrats did wrong in 2024, WALZ: “My guess is that many people didn't hear [our message], because if they heard me speaking, they shouldn't be surprised by anything that's happening because I talked about it every single day for 90 days, what Project 2025 was gonna do.”

OMAR: Rep. Ilhan Omar was interviewed on CBS’s “Face the Nation” yesterday to discuss Pres. Donald Trump and Elon Musk gutting federal agencies. OMAR: “They don't have the support for it in Congress, [and] that’s why they’re not bringing it through Congress. … We are seeing an executive branch that has decided that they are no longer going to abide by the Constitution in honoring Congress's role in the creation of the agencies [and] deciding where money is allocated. … The only recourse we have [is judicial].” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/41iw7B7
MN GOP: via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “The new leaders of Minnesota’s Republican Party want to make peace with anti-establishment activists heading into the 2026 election. … Minnesota GOP Chair Alex Plechash, who was elected in December, said it’s time to resolve intraparty feuds and bring the so-called ‘grassroots’ activists into the fold. The push for unity comes after the anti-establishment wing flexed its power last year, blocking an incumbent congresswoman from winning the GOP endorsement and helping far-right Republican Royce White clinch the party’s backing for U.S. Senate.” PLECHASH: “There has been a feeling from the grassroots — and I think that’s one of the reasons I got elected — that they weren’t paid attention to, and they were kind of shunned in a way. I’m out here to say, ‘No, we’re going to pay attention to everybody.’” READ: https://fluence-media.co/40O8Ghj
CHILDCARE: Via KSTP, state Rep. Nolan West (R-Blaine) is proposing more oversight and security cameras in childcare centers following recent allegations of misconduct at daycares in Plymouth and South St. Paul. VERBATIM: “West is proposing that any video records be held for 90 days. … West is also calling for a one-year mandatory sentence for those convicted of malicious treatment of a child. He also hopes pamphlets explaining signs of child abuse can be distributed to Minnesota hospitals to help educate new parents.” WEST: “Daycare centers [need] to have cameras in areas of toddlers and infants. Once they’re older than that, a child might be able to tell you what’s going on.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4hQw193

DATA CENTERS: via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “Minnesota lawmakers are under pressure to extend tax breaks for data centers as the industry is poised to grow explosively in the state. Those sales tax exemptions are already worth about $100 million a year for data center companies, but the cost to the public is unknown if the industry grows to nearly 40 times the size of the current market, as electric utilities predict. Neither the industry nor the state will estimate how much the tax incentives would be worth — and how much less money the state would collect as a result.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3Q7YZFL
