70 YEARS OF STRONG JOBS AND ECONOMIC IMPACT: The Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend refinery is Minnesota’s largest and most active work site, driving economic impact for local communities. The refinery is busy with plumbers and pipefitters, carpenters and electricians, engineers and environmental scientists, software and IT specialists — there are more than 1,000 full-time employees and, at times, more than 3,000 contractors working on-site on any given day. FOUNTAIN: Via KARE-TV, VERBATIM: “For nearly five years, the Berger Fountain—better known as the dandelion fountain—has stood dry and silent in Loring Park, its once-sparkling jets of water replaced by rust and silence. Now, a coalition of neighbors, volunteers, and local business owners is determined to bring the beloved landmark back to life. Installed in 1975, the Berger Fountain was inspired by a similar structure in Sydney, Australia, after former park board commissioner Ben Berger saw the original and wanted to bring its magic to Minneapolis.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4kWk4Qx
WOLVES: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “Early one morning last week, before visitors arrived at the International Wolf Center in Ely, staff members released two small, black, fuzzy wolf pups into a fenced outdoor yard — the site of an unusual science experiment. Propped up inside the pen stood a mirror, about 4-feet tall. The 3-month-old pups, named Cedar and Rowan, bounded over to it, yelping. They looked at their reflections, pawed and sniffed at the mirror, walked around it, investigating. All the while Matheus de Mesquita Silveira, a Brazilian researcher, stood quietly nearby, filming their every move.” READ/PHOTOS: https://fluence-media.co/4eQHaGt
LEGAL SERVICES: Via MCN, VERBATIM: “The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) announced today a new partnership with LegalCORPS to provide no-cost legal services to all Minnesota nonprofits. BASEBALL: Via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “Before his team took the field in Willmar for a recent game, Jean Morales encouraged them to play with joy. Baseball is a humbling sport, the manager said. At-bats end in outs far more often than in hits. A shortstop can field nine clean ground balls only to be remembered for one costly error. So Morales tells his players to have fun out there above all. ‘We play the game happy and loud and with heart,’ he said. ‘I feel like I’m playing back home with them.’ Back home for Morales is Puerto Rico, where he grew up playing baseball. Knowing how many fellow Latinos in the Willmar area shared his love for the game, he decided to start a new amateur team for them this year.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4kGRxhw
NEXTGEN: Via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “On a college campus, it’s not shocking to see curiosity at work. Though over the summer at the University of St. Thomas, the college’s demographic looks a bit younger. That’s thanks to its many camps– including the ThreeSixty Journalism Multimedia Storytelling Institute. This particular camp is held four days each week for three weeks. It’s a competitive camp to be a part of, but many local kids got a chance to join this year, including multiple Wayzata High School students.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4ePIycB
HISTORY: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “Over 60 people came together on Sunday afternoon to commemorate the rich history of the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District in Minneapolis’ Seward neighborhood. Many were current and past residents, exchanging stories about the area since it was established as a historic district 50 years ago. One of them was Connie Fournier, who has lived in the district for over 40 years.” READ/PHOTOS: https://fluence-media.co/4lmGmM4
VETERANS: Via Marshall Independent, VERBATIM: “After more than a year of work, the last big hurdle had arrived for the new veterans memorial in Cottonwood. On Friday morning, artist John Sterner arrived on Cottonwood’s Main Street, hauling a roughly 800-pound steel and bronze sculpture on a trailer. As people watched from the sidewalk, a Pulver Towing crew secured a cable around the sculpture and slowly lifted it into the air . . . The 14-foot sculpture will pay tribute to members of the U.S. armed forces at Cottonwood’s veterans memorial.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4f8iPMR
SWIMMERS: Via WDIO-TV, VERBATIM: “Swimmers will finish the Edmund Fitzgerald’s final journey, 50 years after the fateful sinking of the ship. The Edmund Fitzgerald went down during a November gale while traveling from Duluth to Detroit, but she never made it. She went down about 17 miles north- northwest from Whitefish Point Michigan. All 29 souls on board were lost. Now, a group of 68 swimmers will finish her route, even carrying iron ore pellets like the 26,000 tons of Iron ore she carrying that fateful day.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4ltyA2X
FOSTER KIDS: Via Rice County, VERBATIM: “According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 80% of children and adolescents in foster care have mental health needs. Statistics on young adults who’ve transitioned out of foster care paint a pretty bleak picture. By the time they’re 21, 29% report experiencing homelessness, 20% report being incarcerated and 23% report becoming a parent. [Holly Schoenbauer], who has a dual degree in theology and psychology from the University of St. Thomas and a master’s in Gifted and Talented Education, and is executive director of the Northfield nonprofit, Project Friendship, says that through observation and research, she discovered that foster children see themselves through that lens. In addition to a lack of permanency, few, she’s found, have any personal belongings. But how, she wondered, could she help kids identify as something other than ‘foster kid’? And what would it take to make it happen?” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3UdlbA4
