BASIC NEEDS
SURVEY: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “Food shelves across the country are seeing increased demand. And a new survey carried out by the University of Minnesota Extension and Minnesota-based nonprofit Foundation for Essential Needs provides a closer look at the need. Among the takeaways from the nearly 10,000 Minnesotans who responded this past spring: more than half say they got half or more of all their food from a food shelf.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/4aRUJpf

Aryavong, program manager of street outreach at Agate Housing and Services, a Minneapolis nonprofit formed in 2021 from the merger of St. Stephen’s Human Services and House of Charity, gathered hygiene kits, bottled water, Narcan and pamphlets with information on housing services — standard items for an outreach day. COMMUNITY OUTREACH
STREET JUSTICE: Via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “Kelly Kunz spends many of her days helping others. She started Street Justice Ministry, a nonprofit that she says ‘reaches the unreachable.’ ‘People walk over people every day and they have no idea their story,’ said Kunz. ‘They have no idea the abandonment, they don’t know the trauma, they don’t understand what they’re walking through, the addiction, what’s causing the addiction.’ Kunz purchased a bus to find people who need help. ‘We show up. We pop the window out. Like the dope dealers serve in the streets. But we do hope,’ said Kunz.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/49bLHlD

GOOD AROUND THE STATE
RED LAKE: Via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “Joshua Jones jokes that he spent his formative years not forming. The 40-year-old member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians used to be a motocross racer, a touring musician, a vineyard manager, a cattle ranch hand and a construction worker. These varied pursuits took him far from Red Lake Nation, but he discovered his passion by returning closer to home. His “light-bulb moment” happened in 2014 in a hydrology class at Bemidji State University, where he discovered a passion for environmental work. As a hydrologist with Red Lake Nation’s Department of Natural Resources, he’s now helping tribal youth find their forms through outdoor programming, which he said is taking a page from the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3N2eel2
