WILD ABOUT READING: More than 500 Minnesota classrooms and 15,000 students are participating in the “Wild About Reading” program, a partnership with Flint Hills Resources which encourages students to read more using Minnesota Wild-branded posters, reading logs, and bookmarks. Teachers set weekly reading goals and give certificates to students who complete the four-week program. Fun program incentives include classroom visits from the Wild’s mascot, Nordy – and the team dog, Rookie; a pair of tickets to a Wild home game, player signed pucks and photos; and a pizza party for a classroom. BOOK GROUP: From Dan Gunderson via MPR, VERBATIM: “Chester A. Arthur was president and the Civil War was still fresh in the national memory in 1883 when eight women, drawn together by their love of literature and learning, formed Blue Earth's first Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. Chautauqua then was a fledgling American cultural and social movement with roots in upstate New York. Its founders believed reading in the arts and sciences would broaden education beyond America’s gilded elite. By the early 20th century, some 10,000 groups had formed. By the 1930s, though, the movement began to fade as public education expanded in towns and cities. In many towns, these learning groups eventually foundered. But not in Blue Earth.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/3QHZu9D
BASEBALL: From Pat Borzi via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “It’s an easy mistake to make, because the notion has been drilled into us for decades: Boys play baseball, girls play softball. One sport for each gender. Males often gravitated to slow-pitch softball as adults, but women of any age were discouraged or prevented from crossing the line to baseball. Until now. The issue came up last summer in northern Minnesota, when a documentary crew accompanying the U.S. national women’s baseball team (yes, there is such a thing) stopped at a Canadian border crossing on its way to the Women’s World Cup Championship in Thunder Bay, Ontario . . . The documentary, partially shot in Minneapolis, highlights seven women from North America, Asia and Africa as they struggle for success and acceptance in their sport.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3Xt30IN

AIRPORT: From Leah Beno via KMSP-TV, VERBATIM: “Every week, Jeanne Morford makes her way through Terminal 1 at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and retired Sgt. Major Vic Gage does the same. Instead of flying, their destination is the Armed Forces Service Center- a place for new military recruits, veterans, retired service members and their families to relax while traveling.” MORFORD: "I often hear is that they say, 'Wow, this is the nicest USO we've seen.' And I said, 'Well, we're not a USO, we are a Minnesota nonprofit that we serve the military, but we're not connected to the military in any way.' And they're very impressed." BRICK OVEN: From Findlay Drabant via Lake Minnetonka Magazine, VERBATIM: “During the summer before high school, students might fill their days in a host of ways: attending captains’ practices, meeting up with friends, taking classes or even working. But current freshman at Orono High School Abby Stovern of Orono and Rosie Carnivale of Independence embarked on a unique adventure last June—and it included bread, bricks and befriending a family in Costa Rica. Accompanied by their mothers, April Stovern and Kate Carnivale, and Excelsior native and 1985 graduate of Minnetonka High School Nancy Alvarado, founder and president of the Minnesota nonprofit Bricks to Bread, the girls spent 10 days in Costa Rica, building a brick oven from the ground up—and they’d do it again in a heartbeat.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4i0ylux
