70 YEARS OF STRONG JOBS AND ECONOMIC IMPACT: The Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend refinery is Minnesota’s largest and most active work site, driving economic impact for local communities. The refinery is busy with plumbers and pipefitters, carpenters and electricians, engineers and environmental scientists, software and IT specialists — there are more than 1,000 full-time employees and, at times, more than 3,000 contractors working on-site on any given day. GOLF: Via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “The half-eaten burgers and fries and other food waste tossed by spectators at this week’s 3M Open in Blaine are not going to a landfill. Instead, they will go to Turtle Lake, Wis., and into a newly expanded plant that turns biowaste into electricity. Viresco AD last week opened its new food liquefaction addition, in time to process about 10 tons of food trash from the PGA Tour event, which is expected to attract about 100,000 people to the TPC Twin Cities course by the end of the weekend.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/40Er2lI
ENTREPRENEURS: Via Sahan Journal, VERBATIM: “The crowd was more of a trickle than a flood at the kickoff to Black Business Week at George Floyd Square on Thursday. But those who attended had a range of activities to choose from, including an art crawl, a guided tour of the neighborhood, kid-friendly games, local vendors and a panel where entrepreneurs discussed their vision for the neighborhood. The city launched Black Business Week in 2021 to support Black entrepreneurs and highlight the key role they play in revitalizing Minneapolis neighborhoods.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4lR9oUr
CHERT: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “Along a gravel road in rural Mower County, amid the emerald rows of corn, is a sign that reads, ‘Grand Meadow Chert Quarry - Wanhi Yukan Trail.’ Wanhi Yukan is the Dakota name meaning ‘There is chert here.’ Next to the sign, a walking trail leads into a tall grove of oak trees. Chert, sometimes called flint, is the stone Indigenous people customarily used to make everyday tools. Shaded by the oak trees along the walking trail is another sign offering both an archaeological and cultural interpretation of the site. The work to create the preserve is a partnership among Mower County Historical Society, Prairie Island Indian Community and The Archaeological Conservancy, a national organization.” LISTEN/PHOTOS: https://fluence-media.co/454q4k8

MAPLE GROVE: Via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “An empty big box store in Maple Grove could soon get new life. The city’s JCPenney shut its doors in 2020. But now a neighbor is seeing the creative potential in its empty storefront. The JCPenney lot is over 87,000 square feet, located at 13701 Grove Dr N. It used to hold multiple departments, including a salon. All of those spaces are empty now, save for many left-behind racks, shelving and mannequins. Dave Berger, the creator of the nonprofit Grove Square Collective, has big dreams for the space.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4lQSaGA

One of a handful of walking clubs in the Twin Cities, The Sunday Morning Club is free and for women only. HOT DOGS: Via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “Earl Weinmann makes a decent dog using locally sourced beef, sauerkraut, onions and a homemade secret sauce for the more adventurous. At $5 each, it’s the best fast-food deal this side of Taco Tuesdays. But the main draw to his Weinmann’s Weenies, the hot dog-shaped cart at Northfield’s Riverwalk Market Fair, is the chance to support both local charities and one of the town’s most upbeat citizens.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3INs20H
MOTORHOME: Via Pioneer Press, VERBATIM: “For 76 years, Midwest Special Services of St. Paul — better known as MSS — has provided opportunities to clients with developmental disabilities. At seven locations across the Twin Cities metro, arts, sports, educational classes, social gatherings and even off-site employment have rolled into place for individuals who, once upon a time, might have been shunned by society. What hasn’t rolled up, until now, has been an art-forward Winnebago. That changed this year when donors put together some $225,000 — most of it coming from a single family — to fund the ‘MSS Explorer,’ an accessibility-enhanced RV that comes complete with an adult changing table, wheelchair-accessible toilet, Hoyer lift and a motorized wheelchair lift.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3UB0Vsk
