HABITAT RESTORATION: Flint Hills Resources has earned Tandem Global WHC Gold Certification for habitat restoration at its Cottage Grove fuel terminal. The certification comes after two years of work in partnership with Friends of the Mississippi River to implement a restoration and monitoring plan to re-establish the 6.5-acre site’s natural prairie and savannah. Flint Hills has held gold certification for its work done with community partners over the past 25 years to restore more than 200 acres of the Pine Bend Bluffs, a critical natural area along the Mississippi River that is adjacent to Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend refinery. This makes two Flint Hills gold certified sites in Minnesota and the first two gold-certified sites ever in the Twin Cities. SCHOOL SUPPORT: Via My North News, VERBATIM: “The last day of school at North High was a Wednesday in June. However, a final staff meeting took place that week at Mortimer’s Bar in Uptown to end what they called one of the darkest years as educators. COLLEGE: Via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “When playtime comes around, a 3-year-old probably isn’t picturing their future. But at Catholic Charities Northside Child Development Center, its teachers certainly are for them . . . A partnership with Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ), a network of organizations fighting multi-generational poverty, is taking that preparation one step further. Most of the youngest students at NCDC will receive financial support for their future: a college savings account preloaded with $500.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4wtGFKe
GRANT: Via Insight News, VERBATIM: “In North Minneapolis, a familiar script is being rewritten — this time by the people who have lived its consequences. A new $10,000 STEAM Forward grant might look modest on paper to traditional institutional funders. But what is unfolding behind it represents something far more significant: an authentic shift in structural power. This is not a top-down program dropped into the community. It is a resource completely engineered by it.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4bw5IEj

GRAVES: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “A few years ago, Tim Shea and his partner Linda Donadei made a daytrip from the Twin Cities to the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children in Owatonna, which housed, fed and educated orphaned children from 1886 until 1945. While they were exploring the historical site and museum there, Shea and Donadei wandered over to the campus’s cemetery where nearly 200 children who lived at the school are buried. The gravestones were in bad shape . . . That one conversation triggered what’s become a major volunteer project for Shea. Over the last few years, he’s meticulously scrubbed each head stone, using the same kind of d/2 biological solution used to clean granite and stone at Arlington Cemetery.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/4h0n2Vz
