TONIGHT: Via KSTP-TV, VERBATIM: “New Prague city councilors will be meeting Monday evening to discuss what some consider a controversial project to build a new, $10 million police station. Some residents there are frustrated with the project, which is already underway. The biggest concern for residents is that their taxes are going to go up in order to pay for the project, but another issue is the lack of transparency from the city on the construction, because the city didn’t hold a legally required public hearing before they decided to give this project the green light.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/45RTZy1
ENDORSEMENT: Via SEIU Minnesota, VERBATIM: “The SEIU Minnesota State Council, bringing together over 70,000 workers in Minnesota from across the state's largest and most powerful unions, is proud to announce the endorsement of Senator Omar Fateh for 1st Choice in the race for Minneapolis Mayor. The Union represents thousands of workers who live in the city and are expected to run a robust campaign talking to members and the community about the need to elect pro-worker candidates in the November election. After previously endorsing Jacob Frey multiple times across different races, union members made clear that it was time for change to ensure the city has a leader who actually stands with working people, especially as the city and state face increased attacks from the Trump regime. On issues like improving conditions for workers, creating reforms to keep our communities safe and working to lower housing costs, Mayor Frey has continually sided with those in power and against working families.”
FUNDING: Via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “Lawmakers granted $777 million to the outdoors, clean water, parks and trails, and cultural heritage this past session. Rep. Samantha Vang, DFL-Brooklyn Center, sponsored the bill. Vang said many of those dollars will help local projects.” VANG: “No other states have any type of funding like this that can dedicate hundreds of thousands even millions of dollars to support and clean our waters, preserve our wildlife and support our parks and trails,” Vang said. “A lot of how we take care of our resources comes from Legacy dollars. So, I want to encourage folks who didn’t get funding this year to continue to reach out.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4nyTgIf
TARGET CENTER: Via Axios, VERBATIM: “As new Wolves and Lynx owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez begin their quest for a Target Center replacement, they're likely to find politicians highly skeptical of sending public money to help them build it. Why it matters: It might not, because the two have said they're prepared to privately finance a new arena, but that doesn't mean they won't ask public officials for help in some form . . . Most Minneapolis mayoral candidates told Axios they're against direct public subsidies, but some kept the door open to the property tax exemption.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/44hQ1xp

EXCELSIOR: Via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “An empty lot on one of the most high-profile corners of a historic suburban downtown is once again a focal point in an ongoing tug-of-war between redevelopment and preservation. Excelsior city officials must soon decide whether to greenlight construction of a mixed-use building that could further elevate the western suburb’s status as an upscale Twin Cities destination. But some critics fear the project will permanently alter the main street’s retro small-town vibe. The lot has been vacant for 15 years since the demolition of a former Pizza Hut.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4lFY3G8
THIS WEEK: Via KTTC-TV, VERBATIM: “Fillmore County officials are inviting the general public to check out the new and improved jail facilities at the Fillmore County Jail this week. Sheriff John DeGeorge says the jail will be open for tours Monday and Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3Gu7jyj
DULUTH: Via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “The New York-based developer set to construct a $500 million real estate project overlooking Lake Superior is in breach of his city contract. Luzy Ostreicher in December presided over a public groundbreaking for one of the city’s largest private investments, a collection of buildings that would house 1,180 apartments, 120 condominiums and retail space. It would sit on the 53-acre site of the former Duluth Central High School and has been marketed as the city’s newest neighborhood. But city officials say the city is missing key financial information, construction contracts are in default and little work has been done. Ostreicher’s agreement with the city will be severed if problems aren’t addressed in 45 days, potentially killing the project.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3T8vrZS

SHIP GOOP: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “Scientists at the University of Minnesota Duluth's Large Lakes Observatory have discovered a new microorganism in an unexpected place—hiding in the oily recesses of a Great Lakes research vessel. The researchers made the discovery last fall, after crew members aboard the R/V Blue Heron noticed a strange knocking sound coming from the ship’s propeller system while on a research expedition on Lake Erie. They hauled the ship out of the water at the Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland. That’s when the Large Lakes Observatory’s Marine Superintendent Doug Ricketts saw a black, tar-like goop oozing out of the ship’s rudder shaft.” READ/PHOTOS: https://fluence-media.co/44zittI
LRT: Via Sahan Journal, VERBATIM: “Two years before the planned start of major construction of the Blue Line light-rail extension, businesses in Brooklyn Park are long accustomed to hearing, ‘the Blue Line is coming.’ But now that the project’s design is being finalized, some residents are amping up concerns about the impact the line might have on surrounding communities. The $3.2 billion, 12-stop extension would connect Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park, with several stops in both of those cities and others in Robbinsdale and Crystal. Construction will begin in 2027, with an expected opening in 2030. The projected cost, which would be among the highest ever for a Minnesota public works project, has made it controversial, even as proponents say it could be an economic boon to an underserved area.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4ljeFns
BILL: Via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “The U.S. House of Representatives passed the so-called ‘big, beautiful bill’ on Thursday, a vote that local food banks expect will have a significant impact. The bill includes changing eligibility requirements to SNAP, the official name for what was formerly known as the food stamp program. Supporters of the bill claim it would help eliminate waste and curb abuse of government programs. Food banks, like Second Harvest Heartland in Brooklyn Park, however, said the federal cuts will put more pressure on food shelves, which were already struggling to keep up with the growing demand.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/44udwlH

SMALL TOWNS: Via University of Minnesota, VERBATIM: “Minnesota’s small towns are home to some of the state’s most beloved gems. Along with breathtaking and subtly beautiful landscapes, friendly faces, and a strong sense of place, lower-population areas can also have limited resources. This makes funding projects and long-term planning difficult. That’s where the University of Minnesota's Empowering Small Minnesota Communities (ESMC) initiative comes in. Harnessing expertise from across the University of Minnesota, ESMC brings together the University of Minnesota Extension Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP), Center for Transportation Studies, Minnesota Design Center, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and Center for Urban and Regional Affairs. Together, these teams provide the tools, guidance, and partnerships that help communities turn vision into reality.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4m0J61R
PALMER’S: Via MplsStPaul, VERBATIM: “Some bars are impossible to elegize. How do you say goodbye to Palmer's Bar, which has operated so long on Minneapolis's West Bank (since 1906, to be exact) that it seems less a bar and more a vital organ of the city, a heart or pair of lungs without which things look irreversibly grim? The bar announced its impending September 14 closure last night via Facebook, and everyone who has ever stomped their feet at the base of that tiny triangle stage or warmed their hands with a slice of Heggies at the bar or heard Cornbread Harris play his Sunday blues is left with their own personal heartbreak; though of course it is also the same heartbreak for all of us.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/45YuXNS
