SNOW: From Adam Uren via Bring Me The News, VERBATIM: “A clipper system is arriving in the state from the west on Wednesday, and is set to produce some flurries in west-central, southern and northern Minnesota. The projected accumulation is not likely to be much – less than an inch in much of the state, with some areas on the Canadian border potentially seeing 3-4 inches – but weather officials are nonetheless warning that there could be challenges for drivers on what is the busiest travel day of the year.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3Z6Fqlg
MEDIA: Via news release from an organization campaigning to bring Major League Baseball to Orlando, VERBATIM: “The Orlando City Baseball Dreamers announced that Orlando has passed Minneapolis-St. Paul in the U.S. media market rankings and is now the #15 market in the country with an estimated 1,902,420 TV homes. Tim Walz’s staffers in an effort to make sure protections of the state’s immigrants remained in place if Donald Trump won the White House again. ‘We wanted to create a ‘bright line’ that could not be crossed,’ said Julio Murphy Zelaya, an advocacy director with the Minnesota ACLU. Zelaya and others are seeking assurances that the state maintains and even strengthens a ‘firewall’ that protects immigrants in the face of Trump’s promised crackdown on the foreign born.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3CLhSe1
RED LAKE: From Melissa Olson via MPR, VERBATIM: “Red Lake Nation leaders and state officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources disagree on how to combat zebra mussels at Upper Red Lake. Tensions between the two governments bubbled up Thursday morning at a quarterly meeting of the Minnesota Indian Affairs, a group made up of the state’s tribal leaders, as Commissioner of Natural Resources Sarah Strommen fielded questions from a Red Lake official. Red Lake Secretary Sam Strong questioned Strommen for several minutes about the state’s approach to combatting aquatic invasive species. Strommen explained the state’s response to the presence of zebra mussel veligers — or larvae — in Upper Red Lake is the most aggressive response of any place around the state.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3CWjYru
WILD ABOUT READING: More than 500 Minnesota classrooms and 15,000 students are participating in the “Wild About Reading” program, a partnership with Flint Hills Resources which encourages students to read more using Minnesota Wild-branded posters, reading logs, and bookmarks. VITAL PUBLIC WORKS PROJECT FUELS THE FUTURE OF THIS WISCONSIN TRIBE - In 2017, one of the “glaring needs” for the Lac Courte Oreilles (LCO) Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, in northwest Wisconsin, was an expanded wastewater treatment facility. “It was at capacity. We were not able to expand any of our businesses or facilities,” says Jason, the LCO Band’s Emergency Management Coordinator. With the support of Enbridge and several other partners, the LCO Band quadrupled its wastewater treatment capacity—allowing for creation of a new preschool, fire hall, 40-unit apartment complex, police headquarters and, still to come, health clinic and new residential community. “I’m very grateful for the partnership we’ve developed with Enbridge,” says Jason. ABORTION: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “Through prior court rulings and legislative actions, Minnesota has among the most accommodating laws granting access to abortion. A lawsuit filed late last week in federal court seeks to upend those laws. It was brought by a group of plaintiffs that includes women who have had abortions they say weren’t voluntary, anti-abortion organizations and ‘crisis pregnancy centers,’ which counsel clients against having abortions.
