POLLS: From Morning Consult:

IOWA: A new Des Moines Register poll published Sunday shows Harris with a narrow lead in Iowa. SEE: https://fluence-media.co/48BDg1g
KEY RACES: From Torey Van Oot via Axios, VERBATIM: “Voters in communities ranging from Chisholm to Chanhassen will effectively determine if the DFL holds its trifecta or Minnesota returns to divided government next year. The big picture: While all 134 state House seats are up for a vote this year, the majority will be decided in a dozen or so competitive districts scattered across the state. Some of these legislative races have come down to hundreds of votes or less in recent elections. Plus: A Senate special election in the west metro puts Democrats' one-seat majority in that chamber in play.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3NXb7rK
RELIGIOUS LEFT: From Madison McVan via Minnesota Reformer, VERBATIM: “Minnesota’s religious left — a coalition of Christians, Jews, Muslims and other people of faith — has gained power and influence at the ballot box and the Legislature in the past decade especially, becoming one of the most influential forces in state politics. The diverse groups making up Minnesota’s religious left have united behind a policy agenda based on shared values, whatever their theological differences: loving one another; caring for the poor and sick; being good stewards of the Earth; and building a fair and inclusive economy.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4fbuSIi
NATIVE: From Allison Herrera via MPR, VERBATIM: “The impact of Native voting was particularly noticeable in 2020 when Indigenous voters helped sway the presidential election in Arizona. And in Minnesota during the 2022 midterm elections, voter turnout increased 45 percent in precincts around the Red Lake Reservation. Jolene Jones, a citizen of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, is the coordinator for Make Voting a Tradition.” QUOTE: “I feel like I have seen a huge increase in Native voter turnout,” Jones said. “And in the last year and a half, two years, we’ve started branching out to our reservations also.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/48xWfJW

SENATE: From Dana Ferguson and Clay Masters via MPR, VERBATIM: “Packed inside the AFL-CIO Labor Federation Building to escape the fall rain, a group of Democratic elected officials, union members and campaign volunteers didn’t let the sudden change of setting upend the reason they were all there. It marked the kickoff to a 22-stop bus tour that was, as U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar put it, ‘to stand up for your freedoms’ . . . Minnesota Republicans are taking a different tack. While Klobuchar’s opponent, Royce White, held a Capitol rally on Saturday, the party itself had no roving candidate and party leader tour at the scale of what the DFL was doing. Instead, the GOP was relying on lower-key gatherings, phone banks and door knocking brigades in key places.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4fPxxYf
MORE: From T Kaldahl via Northern News Now, VERBATIM: “Senator Amy Klobuchar was joined by several DFL down-ballot candidates at the Duluth Labor Temple on Sunday night. ELECTION WORKERS: From Matt Sepic via MPR, VERBATIM: “With concerns about election-related violence on the rise, poll workers and election officials in Minnesota have some new legal protections. Last year the Minnesota Legislature approved a measure that prohibits the intimidation of election workers and interfering with the voting process. In testimony before a Minnesota House committee early last year, Secretary of State Steve Simon, Minnesota’s top elections official, recounted several instances of harassment that targeted election workers from separate counties.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3YzdSET
BROOKLYN PARK: From Kevin Miller via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “There were accusations of levied against Brooklyn Park’s police chief in a chaotic start to Brooklyn Park’s Oct. 28 city council meeting. It came weeks after the council requested one their own members — Maria Tran — seek a mental health evaluation. A request for Tran to change seats resulted in disruptions that nearly ended the meeting early. Tran refused to honor the council’s seating arrangements, prompting rebuke from fellow members.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3AA6DUX
VITAL PUBLIC WORKS PROJECT FUELS THE FUTURE OF THIS WISCONSIN TRIBE - In 2017, one of the “glaring needs” for the Lac Courte Oreilles (LCO) Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, in northwest Wisconsin, was an expanded wastewater treatment facility. “It was at capacity. We were not able to expand any of our businesses or facilities,” says Jason, the LCO Band’s Emergency Management Coordinator. With the support of Enbridge and several other partners, the LCO Band quadrupled its wastewater treatment capacity—allowing for creation of a new preschool, fire hall, 40-unit apartment complex, police headquarters and, still to come, health clinic and new residential community. “I’m very grateful for the partnership we’ve developed with Enbridge,” says Jason. PRISON MAIL: From Ian Russell via KARE-TV, VERBATIM: “Mail sent to Minnesota prisoners will now make another stop before finding its way into jail mailboxes. Starting Nov. 1, the Minnesota Department of Corrections is now under contract with TextBehind, a mail screening service, to check mail before it makes its way into Minnesota prisons. TextBehind is based in Maryland, meaning mail will make its way there first before heading back to Minnesota.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4fzwBXN
POWERLINE: From Kirsti Marohn via MPR, VERBATIM: “The public has more chances this week to weigh in on a proposed high-voltage transmission line in southwestern Minnesota. Xcel Energy wants to build the roughly 170-mile power line from Garvin in Lyon County to Becker in central Minnesota. Dubbed the Minnesota Energy Connection, it would carry renewable energy and connect to the electrical grid at a substation near the Sherco coal-fired power plant, which Xcel plans to retire.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3OdVPPT
ENCAMPMENTS: From Katelyn Vue via Sahan Journal, VERBATIM: “A year ago, Tou Chang set up his tent with about 30 others at an encampment behind the abandoned Kmart on St. Paul’s East Side. It’s one of at least two St. Paul encampments with Hmong and Karen residents. A second, near Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, has at least 60 residents and roughly half are Hmong. A series of viral Facebook videos posted this summer highlighted the issue of homelessness in Minnesota’s Hmong community, where mental health and addiction carry a stigma and the cost of living has made housing precarious for a growing number of families.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3AssJZC
RETAIL: From Emily Haugen via CCX Media, VERBATIM: “Just off West Broadway and Brooklyn Boulevard in Brooklyn Park, once-busy Caribou and Jimmy John’s storefronts sit vacant. Two larger stores nearby — Cub and Petco– are soon to follow later this month. It’s hard for neighbors to feel like it’s not a trend. From a city perspective, Brooklyn Park Community Development Director Tim Gladhill said it’s understandable that neighbors are noticing. However, he assures that these vacancies aren’t permanent.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4efDlIY

From Friday’s Fluence newsletters:
WORTHINGTON: Via Associated Press, VERBATIM: “Over the past generation, immigrants from Southeast Asia, East Africa and now predominantly Central America have transformed this once overwhelmingly white community on the vast prairie. Students of color constitute more than 80% of those enrolled in K-12, Spanish is most children’s first language, and soccer is far more popular than football. ‘Literally everything has changed,’ said Chad Cummings, a city councilor and co-owner of the local radio stations — including a new 24/7 Spanish-language one. Immigration is a core issue for voters this election, and some of the 2024 campaign’s most charged political vitriol has swirled around its effects on towns small and big across the country . . . Thanks to migrants, most of whom come to work in the pork processing plant next to giant corn silos on its outskirts, the town has bucked the trend of rural communities nationwide that never recovered from the 1980s farm crisis.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/48yVRLb
