QUALLS: “The issue is I’m outside of government. Haven’t been an elected politician. I come from the business world. And I believe that I have a message that resonates beyond traditional Democrat Republican messaging. My message is more about us as Americans.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/4lMwHh8
FAIR ART: Via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “In contrast to the political themes and slogans on display in the crop art exhibition, the Fine Arts show generally is not particularly edgy, favoring idyllic landscapes, nature imagery, poetic silos, serene ceramic works and a dose of whimsy. Still, it’s a bit surprising that this year, of all years, the art didn’t have more of a focus on events taking place in our world – from wars abroad to mass deportations at home; attacks on universities and the news media; the use of federal troops against American citizens and more.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4n0Z8sN
IMMIGRATION: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “The family of a Minnesota actor has found itself in the middle of the Trump Administration’s immigration crackdown. On Aug. 15, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Adalberto Borroto, a Cuban immigrant who was on his way from Florida to see his son, Berto Borroto, in his Guthrie Theater debut in ‘Cabaret’ . . . DFL: Via Axios, VERBATIM: “Shortly after the Minneapolis DFL endorsed Omar Fateh for mayor at its controversial July convention, state party chair Richard Carlbom texted a local party organizer that he was ‘sad that this convention ended the way it did.’ Why it matters: For some Fateh supporters, the message reinforces a belief that top party officials were eager to intervene on incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey's behalf after his convention defeat. That suspicion is at the heart of an intra-party feud that has erupted since the state party's rules committee revoked Fateh's endorsement.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4oT6yjC

PRIMARIES: The Senate DFL Caucus this morning released joint statements from Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy and Campaign Chair Nick Frentz on DFL candidates advancing to the general election in SD29 and SD47.
On Louis McNutt in SD29, QUOTE: “It’s no surprise that a working father and union member is vocalizing how politics as usual is not working for the average Minnesotan. Louis has a quest to change course. With Louis’s experience fighting for workers and commitment to protecting health care and our public schools, we are confident voters will reject Michael Holmstrom’s extreme agenda focused on taking Minnesota backwards.”
On Rep. Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger in SD47, QUOTE: “Amanda is a mother, a union member, a scientist, and a dedicated public servant who is laser-focused on bringing down costs for Minnesota families. She is leading the charge to lower the cost of child care, cut red tape to build more housing, and increase access to public transportation – all things that make a real difference in the lives of Minnesotans. We are confident that voters will reject Dwight Dorau for the third time and send Amanda to fight for them in St. Paul.”
ST PAUL: Via Axios, VERBATIM: “St. Paul's newest City Council member takes office Wednesday, and Molly Coleman tells Axios she knows she won't have much time to get up to speed. The big picture: City leaders will immediately launch a budget-writing process that could involve gut-wrenching trade-offs — all as St. Paul faces huge challenges with housing, homelessness, retail vacancies and a fragile downtown office market.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4fShcTw
UOFM: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “More than 2,000 university employees across the state represented by AFSCME have been negotiating with the school for about five months. AFSCME UMN President Max Vast said employees are being offered annual raises that barely keep pace with inflation. They said this is especially inequitable considering the 4 percent raise to university President Rebecca Cunningham’s salary approved by the Board of Regents in June, putting her annual earnings at over $1 million plus retirement benefits . . . The union and university are scheduled to attend mediation sessions on Sept. 16 and 23 with the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3UK3Lvr

LAKE SUPERIOR: Via Associated Press, VERBATIM: “Lauren Isbell and Alex Egan, National Park Service scientists by training, recently found themselves diving more than 20 feet deep in Lake Superior, scouring rocks and dock pilings for any sign of fugitive mussels. After about a half-hour underwater, the pair resurfaced and Isbell thrust a parmesan cheese canister into the air. ‘We got three,’ she announced. ‘All adults.’ Tiny and unmoving in their plastic prison cell, the thumbnail-sized shellfish didn’t look like much to fear. But knowing what Isbell and Egan do — that invasive quagga and zebra mussels have destroyed entire ecosystems and killed billions of baby fish in the lower Great Lakes — it would be foolish to underestimate them.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3JtjU67
