FIRES
BWCAW: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “It started out as a normal fishing trip for Tom and John Connelly. The brothers put in on Saturday for what was supposed to be 10 days of paddling, camping and quiet in Quetico Provincial Park, just across the Canadian border from the Boundary Waters. Then they saw smoke. Then came the fire, and the start of a sometimes heart-pounding struggle to get out alive. Coming out of the wilderness Thursday off Moose Lake, just outside the Boundary Waters, they told a story of a long, harrowing journey they said could have ended in death.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/4f8kuDG

CLEAN | RELIABLE | AFFORDABLE: Via Xcel Energy, VERBATIM: “We’re powering the Upper Midwest with clean, reliable, and affordable nuclear energy. For more than 50 years, our Prairie Island Nuclear Plant, located near Red Wing, MN, has been a workhorse of reliable, carbon-free energy. With two pressurized water reactors producing about 1,100 megawatts, Prairie Island generates enough electricity to power 1.5 million homes across the Upper Midwest. Unlike sources that depend on weather, nuclear energy delivers 24/7 reliability—providing the power we need today while protecting the environment for tomorrow.” LEARN MORE: https://fluence-media.co/4oCHdK9 (SPONSORED: Xcel Energy)
POLITICS
SENATE: MPR notes the flood of ads about Minnesota’s DFL U.S. Senate primary race – some from the candidates themselves. VERBATIM: “But another, often more-caustic slough of ads make the rounds on those same platforms. Political action committees are pouring money into the race. They use their ad time to bash the opponent of their favored candidate. There, [Rep. Angie] Craig is the lopsided beneficiary. One PAC, North Star Dawn, is airing hundreds of commercials per week — sometimes multiple ads during the same TV program.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3SXuh6W

HABITAT RESTORATION: Flint Hills Resources has earned Tandem Global WHC Gold Certification for habitat restoration at its Cottage Grove fuel terminal. The certification comes after two years of work in partnership with Friends of the Mississippi River to implement a restoration and monitoring plan to re-establish the 6.5-acre site’s natural prairie and savannah. Flint Hills has held gold certification for its work done with community partners over the past 25 years to restore more than 200 acres of the Pine Bend Bluffs, a critical natural area along the Mississippi River that is adjacent to Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend refinery. This makes two Flint Hills gold certified sites in Minnesota and the first two gold-certified sites ever in the Twin Cities. COMMERCE
DULUTH: Via Northern News Now, VERBATIM: “In June, a video went viral, showing people fighting in the road at Lake Avenue and Superior Street as crowds arrived for Grandma’s marathon. Days later, the city announced the closure of a portion of the skywalk due to ‘unwanted behaviors.’ For many, those headlines confirm what they already feared -- downtown and Canal Park are headed in the wrong direction.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4yj77b8
SMOKE: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “The area tracked an all-time record for hazardous air quality levels this week as smoke from wildfires burning in and around the Boundary Waters a couple of hours to the north engulfed the region, along with much of the state and the country. That left some travelers scrambling as they tried to decide whether to refocus their vacations to more indoor activities or cancel altogether. Others adapted plans but still made a point to see landmark locations in the region.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/4gJehPQ
SUN COUNTRY: Via Airline Geeks, VERBATIM: “Sun Country reduced its September schedule after higher-than-expected crew attrition and additional cargo flying created staffing pressure, according to an internal memo viewed by AirlineGeeks.
