ELECTION
MINNEAPOLIS: Via Axios, VERBATIM: “The relatively moderate Mayor Jacob Frey won a third term in the deep-blue city by touting his willingness to stand up to policies he viewed as progressivism run amok. The second-place finisher — democratic socialist state Sen. Omar Fateh — made many of those policies centerpieces of his campaign: rent control, limits on homeless encampment sweeps; and potential new taxes on income, wealth and even vacant storefronts . . . Reality check: Voters also reelected most of the left-wing coalition that controls the City Council — many of whom share Fateh’s liberal visions for the city.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4hLPKYx
MORE: Via MinnPost, VERBATIM: “A mixed picture downballot complicated efforts by either side to claim a win for their version of events — though not for lack of trying. Despite an overwhelming fundraising advantage, Frey-aligned groups unseated only one City Council progressive: Ward 7’s Katie Cashman, who was heavily outspent by Park Board member Elizabeth Shaffer.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/47NiFHm

Speaking to reporters at an event in St. Paul, Walz said he believes the election results in Minnesota and nationally made clear that voters are unhappy with the Trump Administration. … Walz also congratulated New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani…Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey. … While their ideologies range from center-left to socialist, Walz said the throughline of their victories was an intense focus on affordability and opposition to President Donald Trump. Walz, who is running for a third consecutive four-year term, said he will factor those issues into his own re-election campaign.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3XcpmO3
SPPS: Via Sahan Journal, VERBATIM: “St. Paul voters approved a levy to raise their property taxes to pay $37.2 million more annually for St. Paul Public Schools. Next year, the district anticipates a $37 million deficit — almost the same amount that the levy would provide.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/43faIct
HIBBING: Via Mesabi Tribune, VERBATIM: “Voters in Hibbing on Tuesday overwhelming rejected a two-question property tax referendum to support the Hibbing School District. SHUTDOWN
SNAP: Via Minnesota Reformer, VERBATIM: “The federal government shutdown means SNAP funding has run out. Democratic-led states and advocates have sued the Trump administration to pay out the benefits during the shutdown using emergency funds, and as part of the lawsuits the administration agreed to pay out partial benefits. But it’s not clear when the money will get to recipients — Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has said it could take ‘several weeks’ to execute partial payments; the state Department of Children, Youth and Families said Tuesday it does not have a timeline.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3JKPqg6
GROCERS: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “The delay and cut in SNAP benefits is also hurting small, independent grocers, especially those in small, rural towns who are already struggling to stay afloat. Tim Juba is co-owner and store manager at Juba’s Supervalu in Blue Earth, Minn., of Faribault County. He says he’s already been losing customers, and his sales have declined since the end of the pandemic.
