CONVICTION: Via news release from the Attorney General’s office, VERBATIM: “Yesterday afternoon, a Hennepin County District Court set aside Edgar Barrientos Quintana’s 2009 first-degree murder conviction based on evidence that the Conviction Review Unit (CRU) of the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office uncovered in an exhaustive investigation. In vacating Mr. Barrientos’s conviction, the court ordered him released from prison pending further proceedings in his case. Subsequently, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office dismissed the case. Mr. Barrientos spent 16 years in prison for the October 2008 murder of 18-year-old Jesse Mickelson, a crime he did not commit. The CRU’s 180-page report, issued in August 2024, recommended that Mr. Barientos’s conviction be vacated after it found convincing evidence of his innocence.” REPORT: https://fluence-media.co/3YZizrR
TO THE RIGHT: From Christopher Ingraham via Minnesota Reformer, VERBATIM: “The average Minnesota legislative district swung two points to the right in 2024, a sign of voter discontent with the status quo under the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party’s trifecta in St. Paul . . . Previous contests have often been a story of geographic sorting, with DFL gains in urban districts offsetting losses in greater Minnesota. But in 2024 DFL margins shrunk almost everywhere, from the Twin Cities’ urban core to the farthest reaches of the Arrowhead. DFL candidate vote shares shrunk in 82 of the 112 House districts that had two major party candidates running in both 2022 and 2024.” READ/MAP: https://fluence-media.co/4hRwngH
IRON RANGE: From Jerry Burns via Iron Range Today, VERBATIM: “Republicans colored the Iron Range political map a deep shade of red Tuesday, flipping the long-coveted House District 7B seat by a double-digit margin and sending a clear referendum on the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party’s control. The decades-old political shift became a complete political realignment, one that seems unlikely to change course for at least a generation or two of voters, continuing a trend seen across rural parts of the nation and Minnesota in recent years.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4fmz8ET

But there were also some potential firsts that never came to be.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4elV95B

SCHOOLS: From Elizabeth Shockman via MPR, VERBATIM: “About half of the Minnesota school districts that asked voters for more money on Election Day got it . . . Voters across the state were willing to renew existing levies for building maintenance and upgrades, and for technology. It was a different story, though, when they were asked to pay more for day-to-day operating costs. Thirty districts this year asked voters to approve levies for daily costs, including 28 that put questions on ballots this week. Only 40 percent of those requests were OK’d — one of the lowest approval rates since 1980.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3Yw6H04

Authorities say the writing on the envelope was determined to be suspicious. Out of an abundance of caution, they contacted the Minnesota Duty Officer, Crow Wing County Bomb Squad, Duluth Fire Department Hazmat, and the FBI.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4fifda2
MINNEAPOLIS: From Alexzia Shobe via Minnesota Spokesman Recorder, VERBATIM: “The city of Minneapolis revealed its ‘vision document’ for George Floyd Square at its final dinner dialogue with the community on Oct. 29. Following Floyd’s murder in 2020, the site became a memorial honoring victims of police brutality—offering reflection, healing, and mutual aid. Understanding that the community should lead efforts to renew that space, the city initiated an engagement process in 2021, leading to its development plans . . . Residents expressed conflicted feelings about the plan thus far, with many saying they are eager to see outcomes rather than proposals.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4fhqI1p

GEN MILLS: From Brooks Johnson via Star Tribune, VERBATIM: “When General Mills paid $1.2 billion for Tyson’s pet treats business in 2021, CEO Jeff Harmening predicted a ‘long runway of strong, profitable growth ahead.’ Three years later, the maker of Blue Buffalo is downgrading the value of its True Chews and Top Chews brands over ‘lower future sales and profitability projections,’ per a recent filing. The Nudges brand may soon follow. After a strong run during the pandemic, pet food has not been the same growth machine for Golden Valley-based General Mills this year, and treats are partly to blame.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3YH4Sxc

But U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley tells Brownfield he’s not optimistic. ‘I haven’t heard of any movement during the month of October, and that movement would be just among staff or the chairs of the two agriculture committees.
