ABORTION: Via KFF, VERBATIM: “In the 2024 election, 10 states voted on ballot measures aimed at protecting abortion rights, including one state (Nebraska) whose ballot also included a competing measure curtailing abortion rights. Voters in seven states voted to expand abortion access, while the ballot measures to expand abortion access failed in Florida, South Dakota, and Nebraska . . . About half of voters in each of these states said the outcome of the abortion ballot initiative was ‘very important’ to them. In all 10 states, more than half of those who voted in favor of protecting abortion access said the outcome of the measure was ‘very important’ to them. In most states, proponents of abortion access were more likely than opponents to say the outcome was very important.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4fhVBTp
MORE: Via NBC News, VERBATIM: “President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in an election in which abortion rights were a heavy focus raises major questions about what might come next for abortion access in the U.S. During the final stages of his campaign, Trump said he thought states should determine their own abortion policies. But his position on the issue has varied widely . . . Because of those inconsistencies, policy experts said, there’s no clear road map for the future of abortion in a second Trump administration — though they offered some theories.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3Cs1oqY
HEALTHCARE: Via ABC News, VERBATIM: “During his campaign, Trump vowed to make the Affordable Care Act ‘better’ and to protect ‘women.’ He also suggested that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would shape the public health agenda of his administration. This is what a second Trump term would mean for health care policies including health insurance and reproductive rights.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3AxMI9d

MEDICAID: Via Stat, VERBATIM: “With former President Trump headed back to the White House, the U.S. Medicaid program, which covers medical care for people with low incomes, could face cuts. But Medicaid’s transformation to a program mostly run by private insurers adds an influential industry to its list of guardians, alongside the rural hospitals that rely on the program to balance their budgets. The threat to Medicaid emerges, in part, from simple math. Republicans are likely to go looking for some major places to cut spending to help fund a plan to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, which expire after next year.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3YUZWGm

OPIOIDS: Via KFF Health News, VERBATIM: “As state and local governments begin spending billions in opioid settlement funds, one of the loudest and most frequent questions from the public has been: Where are the dollars going? . . . Last year, KFF Health News published an analysis by Christine Minhee, founder of OpioidSettlementTracker.com, that found 12 states — including Idaho — had made written commitments to publicly report expenditures on 100% of their funds in a way an average person could find and understand. (The other 38 states promised less.) But there’s a gap between those promises and the follow-through. This year, KFF Health News and Minhee revisited those 12 states.”

FIBROIDS: From Alison Satake via Mayo Clinic, VERBATIM: “Uterine fibroids are a common condition that affects up to 80% of women in their lifetime. Nearly half of those women will experience symptoms that affect their quality of life and fertility, including severe pain and anemia. Uterine fibroids are the major reason for the removal of the uterus by hysterectomy. However, Mayo Clinic researchers recommend minimally invasive treatment alternatives to hysterectomy, in an invited clinical practice paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3UFQEeW

DEER RIVER: From Matthew Freeman via Lakeland PBS, VERBATIM: “About 70 hospital workers from Essentia Health in Deer River gathered on 10th Avenue and Division Street on Monday to begin their 5-day Unfair Labor Practices strike. Representatives from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) spoke with officials at Essentia on Wednesday to see if they could come to an agreement before the conclusion of the strike this Friday. Essentia and hospital workers have been bargaining since August of this year, yet still remain distant on big issues like wages, the demand for additional PTO, and ensuring that hospital workers get the same holiday pay that nursing home workers will now get as part of recent changes made by the Nursing Home Workforce Standards Board.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3V5kTwj

Scrambling to tamp down the spread of the devastating disease, public health officials are blasting messages to South Dakotans on billboards and television, urging people to get tested. Holt works in Aberdeen, a city of about 28,000 surrounded by a sea of prairie, as a physician and the chief medical officer for the Great Plains Area Indian Health Service, one of 12 regional divisions of the federal agency responsible for providing health care to Native Americans and Alaska Natives in the U.S.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4hGwU4C
STUDY: From Terri Malloy via Mayo Clinic, VERBATIM: “A study at Mayo Clinic suggests that an hourglass-shaped stent could improve blood flow and ease severe and reoccurring chest pain in people with microvascular disease. Of 30 participants in a phase 2 clinical trial, 76% saw improvement in their day-to-day life. For example, some participants who reported not being able to walk around the block or up a flight of stairs without chest pain were able to do these ordinary physical activities at the end of a 120-day period.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/3CmfiLy
