POLLINATORS: Via MPR, VERBATIM: “While strolling through the Twin Cities, you might spot a monarch or swallowtail butterfly drifting gracefully through patches of blooming flowers, dusting themselves with pollen. Scientists have found that some butterfly species are picking up more than just pollen. In new research, University of Minnesota scientists discovered that some butterfly species are absorbing doses of lead beyond what occurs naturally. Butterflies play a crucial role in ecosystems, as they pollinate plants and can indicate how healthy the insect population is overall. Principal investigator Emilie Snell-Rood says if lead pollution harms butterflies, it also could threaten the environment for other invertebrates.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/4lgC20z

SUMMER: Via Brownfield, VERBATIM: “Brownfield ag [meteorologist] Greg Soulje is watching how tropical weather develops to predict growing conditions for the Midwest later this summer. ‘We talk about the Tropics because when they come up out of the Eastern Gulf up along the Appalachians or the outer banks of the western sections of the Atlantic, the weather kind of stops if you will. So if you’re locked into heat and dry, you stay there for a good part of the rest of the mid to late summer time. If you had the timely rains, you kind of stay in a wetter pattern.’ He tells Brownfield flash droughts are possible across the Plains July and August.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/462inNl
SOYBEANS: Via Successful Farming, VERBATIM: “In its Crop Progress report released Monday, USDA reported that two states had 100% of their soybeans planted as of June 15 . . . Minnesota soybean growers were the closest to wrapping up soybean planting the week ending June 8 — at that point, 99% of the crop was in the ground. By the week ending June 15, 100% of the state’s soybeans were planted. That’s ahead of normal for Minnesota. The five-year average is 97%, and progress a year ago was only 93%.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4l9G62u

FIRES: Via Associated Press, VERBATIM: “President Donald Trump on Thursday ordered government officials to consolidate wildland firefighting into a single program, despite warnings from former federal officials that it could be costly and increase the risk of catastrophic blazes. The order aims to centralize firefighting efforts now split among five agencies and two Cabinet departments. Trump's proposed budget for next year calls for the creation of a new Federal Wildland Fire Service under the U.S. Interior Department. That would mean shifting thousands of personnel from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service — where most federal firefighters now work — with fire season already underway. The administration has not disclosed how much the change could cost or save.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/43SsXFh

TECH: Via Grand Forks Herald, VERBATIM: “In an era where agriculture must meet the twin demands of higher productivity and environmental sustainability, precision farming technologies are reshaping the way crops are grown. Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows agriculture, food and related industries accounted for roughly $1.537 trillion of the United States' gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023 which is roughly a 5.5% share. America’s farms contributed $222.3 billion of that amount or approximately 0.8% of the GDP. At the forefront of this revolution is Variable Rate Technology (VRT) — a smart farming approach that allows farmers to apply inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and pesticides at different rates across a field, based on specific data about soil conditions, crop needs and environmental factors.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4kTMpHQ
