EXPLAINER: Via Stateline, VERBATIM: “The New World screwworm poses potentially life-threatening risks to pets, wildlife and livestock. TRADE IMPACT: Via Brownfield, VERBATIM: “Following the confirmation of New World screwworm in the United States, both Canada and Mexico have issued import restrictions on live cattle from the U.S. University of Tennessee ag economist Charley Martinez says the impacts will vary.” MARTINEZ: “We probably do send more to Mexico than Canada in terms of just how we trade and the product that we’re sending just south of the border out of Texas,” he says. “When we say Canada, there’s probably not as many cattle going from Texas to Canada in terms of having really big impact on trade.” WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4oO3BBv

PROUD TO CHAMPION ATHLETES EVERYWHERE: Minnesota’s 24,000 family corn farmers may come from different fields than the athletes participating in the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, which are set for June 20-26 in Minnesota. But they share the same values, including dedication, hard work, and perseverance. This summer, Minnesota Corn salutes the talented athletes participating in the games. We’ll be cheering them on from our fields as they shine in yours. (SPONSORED: Minnesota Corn)
WEATHER
EL NINO: Via Brownfield, VERBATIM: “A crop protection specialist expects this summer’s El Nino to influence crop disease pressure. Tyler Harp with Syngenta says conditions in the southern U.S. are typically wetter than normal, with the northern tier of states warmer than average.” HARP: “We transitioned into El Nino from La Nina, probably one of the quickest on record. And so it’s going to be a quite strong one. If we have really wet conditions, we’ll see a lot of tar spot. We could see a lot of southern rust if it stays hot.” LISTEN: https://fluence-media.co/4uFM9Aq
BEETS: Via Ag Update, from Montevideo farmer Megan Horsager, VERBATIM: “Overall, it has been a successful start to the season on our farm. We had good windows for planting with well-timed rains to get the crops germinated timely and evenly. The long stretch of cold and wind in the middle of May put a damper on growth, but we managed to avoid significant frost damage. Since finally turning the corner into summer weather, things have been progressing well.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4ebP12Y

The only significant change in the June WASDE report from the May monthly report was a decline of 0.5 bushels per acre in the projected 2026 national average wheat yield, with a corresponding adjustment to the estimated 2026 wheat production and the 2026-27 ending stocks. There were no adjustments to the 2026-27 corn and soybean carryout levels.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4xwzzps

MN / ND: Via Minnesota Lawyer, VERBATIM: “Minnesota and North Dakota play vital roles in the Upper Midwest’s agricultural economy. While the states share many industry characteristics, they differ in regulatory structures, enforcement priorities, and administrative processes. Agricultural and rural businesses operating across state lines must account for variations in jurisdiction, environmental compliance, employment regulation, real estate requirements, and legal enforcement. Without careful planning, these differences can lead to regulatory challenges, operational delays, or liability exposure.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4etlbpy
